Professor of Leadership and Management, Paresh Wankhade, tells us what it takes to be an entrepreneur and leader in business and how you can develop these skills on a Business Degree at Edge Hill.
Entrepreneurship is all about ambition and what you want to achieve. Increasingly we need to be entrepreneurial, it’s not only important in the monetary sense, but also in terms of getting the most out of situations – maximising whatever you do.”
What it takes to be an entrepreneur
The first thing that is needed to be a successful entrepreneur is passion. It is important to always be passionate about your ideas and aspirations, don’t lose sight of what you want to achieve.
Always have belief in yourself, your abilities and your achievements. Having confidence in yourself and what you are doing will result in positive outcomes.
Another key to success in all aspects, whether it be during your studies or in your future career is to be efficient and effective with your planning. From time management to project strategies, planning will always be fundamental for success.
It is so important to be a keen observer of what is going on around you, both closely and in the world more generally. Observation results in opportunity. Even in times of crisis, focus on the opportunities rather than the disruption.
Never give up. Your plans may not always work out as you’d hoped, it may take a long time to start seeing results, or you may lose hope in your ideas. Without a doubt, don’t forget your passion. Be determined and the results will follow.
The important thing is that all these skills can be learned and developed. Some are likely to come to you more naturally than others, but all of them can be worked on, learned and tweaked to maximise your potential.
Developing entrepreneurial skills on your degree
On the second year graduate enterprise module you will have the opportunity to create your own product or service, launch it into the marketplace and experience running your own small business by trading for a year. You will be supported by a business consultant who is on secondment from industry and the full resources of the graduate enterprise company.
A lot of learning takes place outside of the classroom. You will have the opportunity to connect with and learn from industry professionals. There will be opportunities to gain work experience and, importantly, get a first-hand insight into the world of work.
This is a key attribute and essential transferable skill for any future employment. You will have many opportunities to develop your team working skills by working in groups on assessed projects and by sharing and working on business ideas with other students.
Business and management at Edge Hill is a culmination of sub-disciplines in that you can discover a range of areas and focus on those of most interest to you. Whether it be strategy, leadership, project management, or human resources, you will have a variety of choice of which areas you want to focus and develop your skills.
