BA (Hons) Social Work

Linzi Riley

My lecturers were amazing, every single one of them. They all had different approaches to teaching and each one taught me lessons in life and my career that I will never forget."

It’s always been my goal in life to become a social worker. I left school early and had children young and was a single mother. At 30 years of age, I went back to education to complete my GCSEs followed by a Higher Education access course in psychology and criminology. I gained the grades required and was offered a place at Edge Hill. I have always been interested in this profession to help people and make a difference in people’s lives without judgement.

I had no doubt that Edge Hill was where I wanted to study. After attending open days, Edge Hill really stood out with not only its modern appearance but the success stories that I had read from previous students.

The accomplishment of completing a degree and gaining a job that, although challenging, is extremely rewarding is amazing. My favourite thing is knowing I have set an example to my children who have seen me manage family life whilst completing a degree.

My lecturers were amazing, every single one of them. They all had different approaches to teaching and each one taught me lessons in life and my career that I will never forget. They were all approachable and went above and beyond to help. If I ever had an issue my personal tutor was always on hand to offer advice and support.

I was supported in not only my work but my personal life. The services provided such as the library and careers advice, helped me complete the degree and gain employment. It has changed my life forever and I will always be confident that I made the right choice when completing this course.

My degree has given me confidence and determination. I have a degree that I will use to further my career.

I have successfully gained employment with Wigan Council on a duty academy team. I am also exploring my options of completing a Masters degree in Psychology at Edge Hill in the future.

I would encourage considering studying social work at Edge Hill to go for it. You will be supported from start to finish from the University. This achievement would not have been possible without the support from tutors and my peers.

Anything is possible when you put your mind to it. I will forever be grateful to the staff at the University because without them and the resources at Edge Hill, this would never have been possible.
