Lewis Melville

Lewis Melville holding BA (Hons) History & Politics graduation certificate.

Edge Hill has provided me with lots of real world experiences such as submitting Select Committee Reports that are now published in the House of Commons, and the interviews and conferences that I am able to be a part of.

I was first interested in my chosen subject area as I had a deep fascination with History, learning about the past feels like putting in the jigsaw pieces, on an ever-expanding timeframe, the more pieces in place, the more I understand our present society today and where it all came from.

Edge Hill supported me to become an undergraduate through the Fastrack Programme, proving to myself that I could achieve so much without the required UCAS points to enter degree level study.

Skills I have developed during my degree:

Researching and journalism, a high level of insight and analysis of political concepts and the historiographical significances of certain perspectives, and my social skills, allowing me to organise and work cooperatively with a team of like-minded individuals.

Presenting two conference papers in one week and performing for the Music Society have been the most memorable moments of my degree so far.

Learning about what ideas and concepts, motivate people to do the things they are passionate about are my favourite things about studying my degree.

The students and tutors that work together and help provide opportunities for everyone are the best thing to me about Edge Hill. My favourite place on campus is the lake where the ducks congregate

When I graduate I hope to have a career in improving working conditions by either working for a Trade Union or setting up my own company.

My advice for anyone wanting to study this course would be to choose assignment questions in fields of interests that you want to learn more about. There is a lot of reading and research that is necessary for doing well in my degree, and the majority of that research needs to be done voluntarily by yourself.
