Leah Mullock

I’ve been involved in dance since I was very young. My ambition is to be involved in the dance industry, developing myself innovatively as a dancer and gaining a variety of skills.

Edge Hill had everything I wanted from a university. Incredible facilities and services, and the dance course had a variety of modules that made it stand out. When I viewed the University at an open day, the campus felt like a safe place to live and study, with a welcoming atmosphere.

Performing pieces created by us was the most memorable course moment to date. The degree develops your confidence, determination and individuality. There’s something about the energy and drive on stage, it’s really special. Working with fellow students, who all have a similar passion for moving in a creative way, creating friendships and connections, is one of my favourite things.

The campus is a really welcoming environment. It’s big enough to not feel limiting, and small enough to provide everything you need within walking distance.

The Arts Centre is my favourite place on campus. It’s the place I feel most at home and where I spend most of my time.

I took a placement at Wigan Dance Festival. Although I enjoy performing, I didn’t wish I was performing, which I was surprised about. Working on ticket operating, hosting, teaching workshops, money handling and marketing made me realise the importance of considering all aspects of the industry, not just performing or choreographing, when planning for my future.

I hope to continue to develop as a dance practitioner. I was awarded an excellence scholarship, and I hope to pass on my knowledge as a teacher or lecturer in the future by potentially doing an MA or a PGDE.

Living in halls can be challenging – but overall the experience was exciting. People can be messy, you may not get along with everyone, you may feel homesick. But it all depends what kind of a person you are – stay open-minded and positive. Independence is liberating – staying organised, choosing what you do with your time, cooking your own meals. My signature dish? I’d say a lasagne.

Joining the Cheer Society is one of the best decisions I made. Cheerleading competitions are a big highlight of my university experience. We competed in three national competitions, and had a really successful season. I made more friends outside of my course, and just had a fun time.

The 1975 and Billie Eilish are two of my favourite artists. I’m also a huge lover of musicals. I generally turn to watching YouTube, and Instagram is my go-to – I like being nosey and seeing what people are up to.

My dream destination would be the Maldives. The last place I went to was Corfu, Greece.

My biggest supporters are my parents and my boyfriend. They come and watch me perform and have supported me from the start. They’re my heroes.

My advice? If you’re a passionate person and want to develop as a dancer, then consider Edge Hill. Make sure to include what you want to gain from your degree and how you think it’ll help you in the future.
