Anthony Stark

BA (Hons) Childhood & Youth Studies

The course was really stimulating and I especially enjoyed the field trip to Budapest. It was fantastic.

If you’re choosing a university based on the campus, then Edge Hill easily sells itself. I felt comfortable as soon as I got here as it has a cool vibe and a great community feel. Everyone and everything you will need is on one site and there are even ducks walking around

I chose this degree as I have a background in youth work and knew I wanted to take that further. It also appealed to me because it has a variety of module options which gives you plenty of scope to focus on what interests you. I was even able to do my dissertation on Pokémon GO, based on its social and mental health benefits to children.

Although some courses may leave you focused on a particular job role, I didn’t feel this was the case with this degree. There’s such a wide range of topics to study that you can progress with your qualification and enter areas such as social work, youth work or youth offending.

The course was really stimulating and I especially enjoyed the field trip to Budapest. It was fantastic. We got to visit orphanages and a children’s mental health institute, which gave us the opportunity to see how children’s services abroad compare to those in the UK. Some of what we saw was really saddening, but it all broadened my perspective and really made me think.

Outside of the classroom I was a peer mentor for two years, which basically meant supporting younger students with issues they don’t want to approach their tutor about. In total I looked after 24 other students and got a lot from the experience.

My advice for anyone starting this degree is basically to attend your lectures and enjoy your time here. Edge Hill isn’t like other universities. It is a big, comfortable environment with a lot going on. It’s the coolest place on earth and I’m going to miss it a lot when I graduate.”
