I wanted to be the first in my family to go to university and prove that our background doesn’t define our future.
I chose to study law because I wanted to be the first person in my family to go to university and show that our background does not define our future. Growing up, university felt out of reach, but that motivated me to challenge myself and create new opportunities.
I applied to Edge Hill through Clearing as it wasn’t originally one of my choices. After visiting other universities, I didn’t feel like I would fit in, but when I came to Edge Hill, everything changed. I loved the campus and, after meeting the law tutors, I knew I would be supported as an individual. Looking back, it was the best decision I could have made.
The support at Edge Hill made a huge difference to my journey. There were times when my personal circumstances felt overwhelming and I even considered dropping out, but the encouragement from tutors and support staff kept me going. They helped me build confidence and pushed me to keep moving forward.
Alongside my studies, I joined societies, made new friends and built my confidence. I also developed key skills that I now use every day, including critical thinking, research and communication.
The careers team supported me with applications, helped me strengthen my CV, and gave me the confidence to apply for roles I wouldn’t have considered before. I also completed a work placement at a law firm, which gave me valuable real-world experience and helped shape my career path.
I am now working as a Legal Executive at Courmacs Legal in Blackburn. I secured the role shortly after finishing my degree and started the day after I graduated. In my role, I manage case files, analyse legal documents and support clients throughout their claims. My favourite part of the job is working with clients, especially being able to support vulnerable individuals and guide them through what can be a long and daunting process.
My degree prepared me well for this role, particularly through legal drafting work and the opportunity to work with real clients during my studies. I am currently completing my Master’s in Law and plan to pursue the SQE in the future.
My advice to anyone considering studying law at Edge Hill would be to make the most of the support available to you. Choosing Edge Hill was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
