From classroom to the DJ booth

Edge Hill University alumnus Andy Whiston will return to campus this September for the Edge Hill Alumni Reunion Weekend 2026.

Edge Hill University alumnus Andy Whiston will return to campus this September for the Edge Hill Alumni Reunion Weekend 2026, reconnecting with former classmates while also taking to the decks as DJ for the celebrations.

Andy, who studied BSc (Hons) Science and Design Technology QTS at Edge Hill, has built an inspiring and unconventional career journey shaped by education, music and a passion for helping others.

Choosing Edge Hill for its reputation as a leading teaching institution, Andy says his university experience helped shape both his professional and personal life.

Andy said: “Living on campus was my favourite part of university life. Everyone felt like family.”

Alongside his studies and teaching placements, Andy became involved with the Entertainments Committee where he learned how to organise and run events. It was an experience that, at the time, simply added to the fun of university life, but in hindsight, planted the seeds for his future career.

After graduating, Andy spent 15 years working in teaching, progressing into senior management. As family priorities changed, he moved into roles including residential social work, supply teaching and later remote IT support during the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was during this period that Andy began reflecting on what truly motivated him. Inspired by the Japanese concept of Ikigai – meaning ‘a reason for being’, he decided to return to a lifelong passion: music.

What began as a bold midlife pivot soon became a thriving career. Andy is now a self-employed wedding and events host and DJ, combining his love of music with the interpersonal skills developed throughout his teaching career. Building on this, he also works as a DJ tutor with the School of Electronic Music in Manchester working with their BPM Rehab department, supporting young people with Acquired Brain Injuries through music.

Andy said: “In the world of music BPM stands for Beats Per Minute however in this instance it stands for Brains Powered by Music as we are working with children and young adults with ABI’s (Acquired Brain Injuries) to teach DJing skills. It is absolutely incredible and so rewarding to see the students gain confidence and self-esteem, develop memory, build concentration, emotional regulation and improve fine motor skills and coordination.”

Andy’s journey is a testament to embracing change and following what you love. His advice to current and prospective students reflects that mindset: “Just do it, embrace it and thrive. Get involved, do as much as you can – and then some more. One life, live it.”

Andy continued: “Some of the best days of your life happen at university and you leave with friendships that last a lifetime.”

This September, Andy will return to campus for the Edge Hill Alumni Reunion Weekend 2026, not only to reconnect with friends but to DJ at the celebration, bringing his story full circle. From organising student events to soundtracking alumni memories, Andy continues to make the most of every opportunity.
