Edge Hill University recognised by Government for pivotal role in improving workforce skills

October 22, 2025

Edge Hill University has been recognised in the UK Government’s Post-16 Education and Skills White Paper for its leading role in addressing workforce challenges in Further Education (FE).

The University’s work on the Industry Associate Programme pilot, in partnership with The Gatsby Foundation and FE colleges across North England, has been highlighted as a pioneering approach to bridging the gap between industry and education.

The pilot supports professionals from sectors such as engineering, healthcare, construction and business to consider teaching roles as a career path.

As Industry Associates they bring vital real-world expertise into the classroom, enriching education and inspiring the next generation of skilled professionals.

Michelle Pearson, Head of Initial Teacher Education Strategy at Edge Hill said: “We’re incredibly proud to see our project recognised by the Government.

“Supporting professionals to consider teaching as a career doesn’t just enrich students’ education with real-world expertise, it reshapes learning and improves the skills of the future workforce.

“This recognition affirms the impact of our work and inspires us to keep innovating.”

Edge Hill’s contribution includes designing and coordinating a structured training programme, introducing professionals to the FE environment and equipping them with practical strategies for engaging learners.

Dr Helen O’Keeffe, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Dean of Education, added: “As an outstanding provider of Further Education initial teacher training, we fundamentally believe in the power of education to change lives and improve life chances for everyone.

“This programme is another step in supporting those bringing their vital industry expertise to the classroom and we’re proud to have played a leading role.

“This recognition in the white paper highlights Edge Hill’s commitment to educational innovation and its role in shaping a more responsive and inclusive FE sector.”

The University worked with Barnsley College, Oldham College, Nelson and Colne College (part of East Lancs Learning Group), Wigan and Leigh College and City of Liverpool College during the pilot.

Evaluation of the pilot will support understanding of the project’s impact and inform future development, with a national event planned in 2026 to share insights and outcomes.
