Edge Hill University hosted staff and students from a research-intensive Ohio university as part of their international learning trip.

A group from the University of Toledo, including Ohio public leaders, faculty, PhD students and senior administrators, were invited to Edge Hill’s Ormskirk site by the international department.

The visit aimed to provide the research university’s students and faculty with insights into PhD program delivery and the structure of UK higher education, specifically focusing on various models of university administration, governance, and doctoral training.

Professor Fiona Hallet, Associate Dean of Edge Hill’s Graduate School, said: “Our discussions with colleagues from the University of Toledo offered valuable insights into the development of research practices and the growth of research degree programmes across both universities.

“Exchanges like these play a key role in strengthening academic collaboration and broadening the global impact and significance of our research culture.”

Delegates from the Ohio university joined series of discussions and presentations on university governance and management, and on doctoral preparation. They were also given a tour of Edge Hill’s Arts Centre, historical markers around the campus and the 1885 archives exhibition which celebrates the University’s founding as the first non-denominational teacher training college for women.

Snejana Durst, Professor of Higher Education, Administration and Policy at Toledo University, said:

“Today was truly amazing, an incredible learning opportunity for both my students and myself, from start to finish.

“The campus is beautiful and uniquely inspiring. The team’s exceptional care, including the valuable opportunity to meet different leaders, made us feel thoroughly looked after. Their dedication was evident.”

Alison Spencer, a PhD student in higher education and administration at Toledo University, offered her thoughts on the trip: “Exploring all parts of the absolutely stunning campus was a highlight. It was fascinating to learn more about the University’s structure, and the discussion about research grants was particularly beneficial.

“Ultimately, despite our different approaches, our shared goal is to empower students to achieve their educational aspirations and make positive contributions to society.”

The University of Toledo, located in Ohio, USA, is known as a public research university, committed to global engagement and inter-institutional collaboration.
