As part of its continued investment and development, Edge Hill is pleased to soon be revealing its new Life Sciences building. This building will support cutting edge research and expert teaching at the university and will provide even more opportunities for students to develop their skills alongside expert academic staff.

The £17.4m investment is just the start of a wider masterplan for the development of the campus. With total investment adding up to £53.4m this is a very exciting time for the university, its staff, and its students.

John Cater, Vice Chancellor at Edge Hill University, explained: “Edge Hill is always striving to be at the forefront of research and to give our students the best opportunities, and this investment is crucial for us to do that. Life Sciences are a prime area for growth in the UK, so we’re being proactive in investing here to equip the next generation of students, researchers and medical professionals with the skills they need.

“Despite the well documented challenges affecting the sector, we are in a strong position as an institution and are pushing forward with investment to take our already impressive facilities to the next level.”

Edge Hill’s investment in their campus and facilities has been recognised in a flurry of recent award wins, including being ranked in the Top 4 Universities in the North West (Complete University Guide 2025) and the Top 20 for facilities spend (Complete University Guide 2025). The university has also achieved first place in the Best Student Home category in the 2024 inaugural ASRA awards, alongside being finalists in 4 categories of the Global Student Living awards 2024.

John continued: “Our commitment to investment is just one of the reasons we’re ranked so highly in the Complete University Guide 2025, and the recent award wins are a testament to the hard work behind the scenes at the university to make Edge Hill an outstanding place to live and study.

“Students are of course at the heart of what we do, and we won’t stop investing in our facilities. The Life Sciences building is just the beginning.”

The Life Sciences building will significantly advance Edge Hill’s capabilities in Biomedical research, enhancing work being carried out in areas such as cancer, neurobiology, genetic skin conditions and ageing.

The new laboratory facilities will ensure that Edge Hill’s undergraduate Biosciences students will stand out from the crowd as graduates – having experience of using the latest technology and having worked alongside experienced researchers on real-world projects.

John continued: “It’s exciting to imagine what these students will do in the future with the knowledge they gain from these amazing new facilities. It will also be utilised by our medical school, as we’ve recently been granted new Government funding to increase medical places by 26% to train much-needed doctors.

The increase in places means we will play a key role in helping the NHS deliver its Long Term Workforce Plan, and gives more students the opportunity to benefit from our expert training and impressive new facilities.”

The new building will house research laboratory spaces, a microscopy room, nitrogen laboratory, autoclave room and much more. The facility also boasts plenty of breakout areas and seminar spaces, so students can combine practical skill development with research and knowledge building.

John added: “We look forward to unveiling the new Life Sciences building this summer and our investment in student experience will continue, with our £22.5m accommodation development and new £8.5m Student Union by the start of the new academic year.”
