Over the past couple of months, we’ve been hosting our 2024 offer holder days. And we’ve caught up with one of our visitors, Eva, who’s told us all about her visit.

My open day experience really encouraged me to apply to Edge Hill. It’s a university which has so much to offer with all the opportunities that are available. I spoke to many students and tutors during my visit which gave me an insight into what student life is like at Edge Hill.

Arriving on campus

When I arrived at my offer holder day, I was immediately greeted by friendly and welcoming faces who told me where I needed to go to register for the day. They provided me with all the information I was going to need throughout the day. I was even given a personalised lanyard, which had my name, subject session and the timetable of the events that were running throughout the day, as well as their locations. It was really organised and it helped me to arrive at my subject taster session on time as I knew exactly where I needed to go.

The student experience fair

I had a chat with a member of the Student Life Team who told me about the clubs and societies I can get involved in. I was really impressed with the great selection on offer. There are academic and social clubs, such as sports, religion, dance and drama. There are also plenty of societies too, like the Sign Language society, Bikers society, Criminology society, Doctor Who society and Computer Science society. There’s even a Taylor Swift Society for all you Swifties out there.

I also had a conversation with the Edge Hill Sport Team who told me more about their exercise classes. Such as beginners fitness, running sessions and free sporting events that are held throughout the year. I found out that it doesn’t matter how good you are at sport or how fit you are as there are weekly sessions for all abilities across a number of sports.

The Careers Team were on hand to explain how they can help me to find a part-time job whilst studying. They explained that sometimes there are roles available on campus and what types of jobs I can expect to find in the local area. I spoke with them about other ways I can stand out to graduate employers, like getting work experience and volunteering.

My subject taster session

At 1.30 pm, it was time to go to my subject taster session which lasted about two hours. I knew where to go from the information on my lanyard and there were plenty of student guides on campus to direct me. The tutor gave an introduction to the subject and our session for the day. This eased us in before we were split into groups to discuss our topic – the impact of healthy and unhealthy lifestyles across the country. We even identified where you’re likely to live the longest.

It was nice getting to know the people I could be studying with in September. It was interesting to hear their thoughts and opinions on the subject and what they find intriguing about it through engaging in our taster activities. During the session, we learned from each other, and we shared our own ideas on the topic.

The lovely thing about it was that I didn’t find it overwhelming, and I wasn’t expected to know about the topic already. Everyone was encouraged to contribute but it wasn’t forced which was more comfortable. There wasn’t a pressure to contribute if you were feeling uncomfortable about sharing ideas. The session was a nice way to discover what a typical seminar might be like. And at the end of my session, I was able to have a chat with the tutor about any questions I had.

After my offer holder day

I finished my offer holder day feeling like I know Edge Hill University completely. The questions I asked were answered in depth by tutors and current students, so I left with no concerns or uncertainty. And I now have a better understanding of what my course will include and what my experience will be like.
