Edge Hill University has been rated outstanding by Ofsted across all three teacher training age phases.

In January, Ofsted inspectors visited our Ormskirk campus to judge the quality of education, leadership and management within the Faculty of Education. We are now proud to announce that Edge Hill University has been awarded ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted for teacher training. The rating has been awarded across all three teacher training age phases – Primary (including Early Years), Secondary, and Further Education. As of now, we are the only higher education institution (HEI) in England to do so.

As the largest teacher training provider in the North West, we strive to deliver the highest quality education and support for our trainee teachers. This news recognises the commitment of Edge Hill to providing outstanding teacher training to help shape the minds of future educators.

“Everyone in the Faculty of Education is entirely committed to the transformational power of education, for every learner from early years onwards, and for their families and communities.

We work hard to provide our trainees with the highest quality preparation and to ensure they are confident, curious and compassionate in their future careers. We are also privileged to work with hundreds of like-minded partners – the schools, colleges and other settings who share our belief in social justice and refusal to settle for second best.”

Dr Jane Moore, Dean of Education

“For nearly 140 years Edge Hill has been committed to developing the very best teachers for the profession. We are delighted that inspectors have recognised the dedication, innovation and commitment of this partnership in making a difference to the life chances of children and young people across the region.”

Michelle Pearson, Head of Teacher Education Strategy

Jess Booth graduated with BA (Hons) Primary Early Years Education with QTS in 2022. Jess is now an early career teacher at Evelyn Primary School in Prescot. After hearing about our ‘outstanding’ achievement, Jess said:

“I was proud to take part in the inspection by sharing the wonderful experiences I had during my studies and the continued support I’ve received since.

Now in my second year of teaching I still regularly refer to the exceptional guidance and tools we gained at Edge Hill and I will always look back fondly on my time at Edge Hill.”
