Political commentator and Edge Hill University alumnus Dan Hodges will return to campus for an In Conversation event as part of the University’s celebrations to mark 90 years at its Ormskirk campus. Since graduating from Edge Hill in 1990 Dan has firmly established himself as one the country’s foremost media commentators. At the event on 15 November he will be sharing his career history of being near the heart of political debate and his insights about the direction of media coverage as the country heads towards the next General Election.
Dan said: “I am thrilled to be coming back to Edge Hill where I did my degree all those years ago. The campus has grown significantly and it will be great to see all the exciting changes, talk to the students about their studies and their ambitions while telling them about my journey.”
Columnist for the Mail on Sunday and named Political Commentator of the Year in 2017, his journalistic career has also seen him working for the Telegraph, New Statesman and appearing in many TV and radio discussions as well as being a high-profile commentator on X.
He has a long interest and deep experience in politics as son of the late Glenda Jackson, whose career included more than twenty years as a Labour MP. In the last twenty years, Dan has himself worked as a parliamentary researcher, a Labour Party official, GMB official and as director of communications for Transport for London under Ken Livingstone.
Paula Keaveney, Senior Lecturer in Politics said: “It is so important to understand the role the media plays in politics so it’s great that we have an important media player, Dan Hodges, joining us to share his insights. He’ll be able to look back at recent, and not so recent, political events while sharing thoughts about how the next General Election might be covered. As a former journalist myself I know how vital it is, if you want to study politics, to also study media operations. Dan’s talk is one of the ways in which we give our students that vital understanding.”
