A student from Edge Hill University has been recognised for her incredible dedication and commitment to volunteering.

Charlotte Black, 20, from Belfast, has devoted hundreds of hours in her spare time to volunteering with a range of organisations including Guides, Rainbows and Brownies, and an elderly care facility in her hometown.

And as a result of her efforts, Charlotte has secured an Excellence Scholarship worth £2,000 over the course of her studies.

Charlotte’s passion for volunteering has even taken her to the US, working as lead counsellor for a summer camp for school-aged children.

She said: “I first started volunteering as part of working towards my Duke of Edinburgh qualification in the Girl Guides and it’s just grown from there.

“Volunteering can be really empowering. It’s had a huge impact on me, and hopefully I’ve made an impression on the people I’ve helped over the years.

“The experiences I had when I was younger made me want to provide the same opportunities for other people by giving something back.”

Now in her first year of studying BA (Hons) Primary Education with QTS at Edge Hill University, Charlotte took a significant step towards achieving her dream career after working as a classroom assistant for a pupil with Special Educational Needs.

She added: “Through my volunteer work with Rainbows and Brownies, I realised how much I enjoyed working with kids and it’s helped set me on the career path towards being a primary school teacher.

“The opportunities I’ve had through volunteering have helped me develop skills that I’ll use at university and beyond.”
