Securing your place at university is exciting. For most of you, it will mean moving away from home for the first time. There’s a lot to think about ahead of Welcome Weekend. But don’t worry. If you are starting your first year here at Edge Hill, we have a few tips you should know before you arrive.
Moving in time
You will be given a date and two-hour time slot to move in. This ensures that everyone has enough space and time to get all of their belongings into their room. When you first arrive on campus, you will be given your UniCard and keys. There will be plenty of student and staff helpers around to help you find your building.
Don’t worry about parking
On your moving in day you will be allowed one space in the car park. This space is for a car only, no vans. So don’t worry, even if you don’t have a parking permit, you will be allowed in.
Avoid the photo queue on moving in day. Before you arrive you will have been asked to provide a photo of yourself for your UniCard. If you complete this step, you can pick your card up on the day. If you don’t complete this step, you will have to get your photo taken before your card is handed over. This is where you might find queues. You will be busy enough moving in, so ensure you have provided a photo before your arrival.
Time to do stage two
It’s important to remember to complete stage two of enrolment when you get to campus so you don’t delay receiving your student finance.
To complete stage two, start by connecting to the University wifi. It’s called Eduroam and you can log in with your student number and password. Follow the instructions in your stage two email, which we will send to your Edge Hill email account. Be sure to set this up before you get here.
If you can’t find your email, you can start stage two on the Edge Hill website.
If you don’t have a phone, you can use any of our networked campus computers. To log into the computer, you will also need to use your student number and password.
It is a great idea to organise your belongings by room when packing. Have a box for the kitchen, one for the bathroom and one for the bedroom. When you arrive at your flat, you will know exactly where everything belongs. We recommend packing your belongings in smaller boxes to make it easier to get them from your car to your room.
Got a lot to carry? We have trollies, trailers and buggies available to help. Look out for signs directing you on Welcome Weekend. They definitely help make moving in day a lot easier. As well as this we have lots of student and staff helpers across the weekend. There will be lots of helpful hands to assist you.
Bring the essentials
Whether you get hungry while moving in or want to start your food stash, bringing essentials is always a good idea. Tea, coffee, bread, cereal, crisps. However, you don’t need to overdo it. There are supermarkets in Ormskirk and we even have a shop on campus.
You could even offer your snacks to your new flatmates – what better way to make friends than over a cup of tea and biscuits?
When packing for university, we recommend you bring the following items:
- A computer (if you wish to use one)
- Your own towels and toiletries
- Bed linen, a duvet and pillow
- A TV if you would like one and are living in halls where one is not provided
- Posters, photos or anything that will make your room your own
You might have to bring kitchen utensils or saucepans. But remember that everyone is in the same boat. There may be items that you will all need that you could purchase together as a flat and save money. Or that someone else has brought with them that you could share.
To find out more about what your Halls will include, visit our Living on campus webpage.
Make your space your own
Be sure to decorate your new room with items that comfort you. If you feel relaxed and at home in your room, it will help make the transition easier. We recommend bringing some photos of your family and friends or maybe your favourite slippers. Whatever it is, that will make you feel at home.
During the first few weeks at university, you will be invited on a free Ikea trip. Who doesn’t love a trip to Ikea? This is the perfect way to meet new people and decorate your room. Bring your personal items with you and save the candles, plants and mirrors for Ikea.
It is also worth noting that your new room will be filled with furniture. Your bed, wardrobes and storage is built in, so you won’t need to bring them along with you.
A proper goodbye
When it is time for your loved ones to leave, why not plan a special goodbye at one of Ormskirk’s local restaurants? Within 10 minutes of campus, we have The Sandpiper, Ormskirk Food Market and many independent cafes. Have some last minute quality time together before starting your university journey.
Get some rest
Moving in day is a long and, for some, an emotional day. You will need a good rest ready to start Induction Week on Monday morning. It’s going to be a busy couple of weeks. Make sure you reward yourself with rest to avoid getting ill.
