If you’re having trouble using Microsoft Teams, try these quick tips before contacting the Catalyst Helpdesk.

Logging In

• Always log in using your student username and password to ensure full access.
• If you accessed the meeting link via Blackboard or student email, you may already be logged in.

Finding Your Teams Meeting Link

• For assessments or interviews, you may receive a calendar invite.
• For lectures, your tutor may add the Teams meeting link directly to your Blackboard module.

Check Your Microphone, Speakers and Camera

• Select the correct devices:
  • Click the arrow next to the microphone or camera icon in the meeting toolbar.
  • Choose the correct microphone, speakers/headphones, and camera.
• Allow permissions:
  • Windows: Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone / Camera and ensure Teams has access.
  • Mac: Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone / Camera and tick Teams to allow access.
  • Browser: Click the padlock icon in the address bar and set microphone and camera permissions to “Allow”.
  • Laptop keyboard camera toggle: Many laptops (including Acer, HP, Lenovo, Dell, and ASUS) have a dedicated camera key (usually with a camera icon) on the function row (F1–F12). Press that key, or Fn + camera key, to enable the camera.
• Ensure your camera is:
  • Turned on.
  • Not being used by another app.
  • Not covered by a lens cap or privacy cover.

Choosing the Right Browser

• We recommend using the Teams Desktop app for the best experience.
• If using a browser:
  • Try closing and reopening Teams to fix minor issues.
  • Use Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or the latest Microsoft Edge.
  • Avoid Safari or older versions of Edge.
  • Check browser settings for blocked pop-ups or permissions.

Microsoft Teams App

• Make sure the app is up to date. Older versions can cause problems.

Check Your Internet Connection

• Poor internet can affect sound and video.
• Move closer to your Wi-Fi router, use a wired connection, or restart your router.

Accessing Files for Screen Sharing

• Locate your file before sharing.
• Save files to your university OneDrive.
• Open the file before sharing.
• For PowerPoint presentations, use PowerPoint Live for better performance.
