English Language Requirements

To meet your full potential at Edge Hill University, you need a good standard of English language. Relevant evidence of your English language proficiency is mandatory to study at undergraduate or postgraduate level.

The UK Visa and Immigration Authority (UKVI) stipulates that every student requiring a visa to study in the UK must show evidence of a minimum level of English language (Common European Framework (CEFR) B2 level) in order to be granted a Student Route visa (previously known as a Tier 4 visa).

Some of our courses may require that students demonstrate a higher level of English proficiency or Formal English Language qualification that is comparable to UK GCSE and this will be listed on the academic requirements of the individual course.
Please read the information below carefully to see if you can meet the English Language requirements for your course.

We do not accept letters of proficiency.

Demonstrating English Language Proficiency

You do not need to prove your knowledge of English if you’re from one of the following countries or territories, or you’ve completed a qualification equivalent to a UK degree in one of them:

  • Providing a passport or degree from one of the approved majority English speaking countries. This includes Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Malta, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, USA
  • Canadian passport holder.
  • Holding an approved high school qualification
  • Sitting an Approved SELT (Secure English Language Test)
  • You may also consider one of our pre-sessional English courses

Degrees from universities in non-majority English speaking countries that are taught and assessed in English are accepted by the University as meeting English language entry requirements.  The degree must be no longer than 10 years old at the beginning of the programme of study. Applicants will be asked to provide evidence of this and may be required to undertake further assessment via an online recorded interview.

Please click on the relevant dropdown menu for more information on acceptable high school qualifications and SELTS.

Acceptable English Language Tests

One way you can meet the English language requirement is through an acceptable English language test. Please click the dropdown menu that relates to your area of study for more information on the suitable tests and grades required.

Please note that your test certificate must be within its period of validity. For example, the IELTS, Pearson and Trinity ISE SELTs are only valid for two years after the test date.
