Two Steps Back
Written and Performed by Emily Parr
She was not of an ice-breaking, team-playing, shot-drinking disposition. Hiding in her room eating dry bran flakes, she now begins to wonder…
Why has she moved away to university?
Following its successful debut at Shakespeare North Playhouse Studio, this play comes to campus to share the experience of struggling to adjust to student life, especially when homesickness hits hard.
Building on the theme of learning to live alone in her previous show ‘No Coward Soul’, Emily goes further in fusing audio and visual elements such as live drawing with a multi-rolling solo performance.
Audience responses:
· “Loved it, very true, open and honest. Can totally relate to these experiences.”
· “Absolutely brilliant! So inventive and different – loved the art along with the acting”
· “Funny and moving and evocative and so enjoyable”
· “Nailed Uni life spot on”
· “It’s a long time since I laughed so much”
Reviews of previous show ‘No Coward Soul’
“She is an expressive performer and her writing has an undoubtedly intended lyrical quality which takes the audience on a journey where judging by the laughter most if not all snippets were easily recognisable” – NORTH WEST END UK
“It was searingly honest – that made it totally engaging.”- “So funny and so touching in equal parts. Reminded me of Victoria Wood at her best…”- “a bravura performance”
Currently working as a Project Officer for the National Literacy Trust and a Learning Facilitator for National Museums Liverpool, Emily has written poetry, prose and plays combining comedy and tragedy for over twenty years. Gaining her PGCE at Edge Hill University, she taught English in various secondary and FE colleges and was selected to undertake the Liverpool Everyman Playwrights’ Programme.
