Orthopaedics has witnessed a rapid growth in surgical trials in the last decade, with researchers trying to address the needs of patients with pain, loss of function or lifestyle restrictions. With the introduction of a structure to innovation in surgical practice, there is now a clear roadmap for the evaluation of novel techniques and interventions.
Professor Adam Watts lecture will elaborate on the innovations he has undertaken in elbow surgery, to address unmet needs for patients or reduce surgical burden. From new concepts to improve understanding to novel surgical techniques he will describe the research approaches used and the highs and lows on the long pathway to adoption.

Adam Watts joined Edge Hill University in February 2024 as Professor of Orthopaedics and Honorary Consultant in Orthopaedic Elbow Surgery, establishing the Musculoskeletal Research Group to bring together interested parties around the themes of frailty in Orthopaedics and research in low volume musculoskeletal interventions.
Professor Watts has received funding from NIHR for a number of randomised trials in Orthopaedic upper limb surgery. He is Specialty Editor for elbows at the Bone and Joint Journal and Associate Editor at the Shoulder and Elbow Journal. He is on the Editorial Board of the National Joint Registry and serves as Honorary Secretary on Council at the British Elbow and Shoulder Society.
