This free service is aimed at people aged 18 or over, with one or more long-term health conditions, or people without long term health conditions whose main goal is to improve physical and/or mental health. The service includes fitness assessments and exercise programme design undertaken by students enrolled on the BSc Sport and Exercise degree programme at Edge Hill University, under the close guidance and supervision of members of staff. The fitness assessments and the exercise programme will be approved by a qualified member of staff to help ensure they are appropriate for your abilities, needs, and any health conditions you have.

There also is an optional extra involving receiving exercise instruction for 6 weeks in the gym in the Sports Centre at Edge Hill University. You do not need to be a member of the Sport Centre and there is no cost involved, however, the offer is only during second semester, and available times are restricted to:

  • 12-2pm Mondays
  • 9-11am Tuesdays
  • 9-10am Wednesdays
  • 11-1pm Thursdays

Expectations of participants

If you enrol for this service, there is a minimum expectation that you will:

  • Undertake pre-exercise health screening, such as the assessment of resting heart rate and blood pressure, height, and weight, and completion of a preparticipation health screening questionnaire
  • Answer questions about your health, any medications, lifestyle, and health and fitness goals
  • Undertake fitness assessments that will be chosen according to your current abilities, any health conditions, and personal goals
  • Receive instruction on how to do the exercises in your exercise programme correctly

People with certain health conditions will be required to obtain written approval from their GP.
