Frankenstein
Frankenstein (2014) by Wang Yong Beom and Brandon Lee, is a Korean creative musical, developed in South Korea, by Korean creatives and production companies.
This is a world premiere sung in English and performed by an international cast of musical theatre students from Dankook University, South Korea and Edge Hill University, UK.
Frankenstein feels like a licensed Broadway or West End musical, with large scale set design, fancy costumes, rich orchestration and impassioned singing with lots of vocal fireworks.
This adaptation is set during the Napoleonic wars, and Victor Frankenstein is employed by the government to study soldiers who survive battle, with the aim of creating super soldiers. He meets Henri Dupre, a fellow doctor who specialises in reattaching limbs, and together they experiment with creating life. Henri is falsely accused of murder and guillotined, so Victor is left to continue the work alone. He uses Henri’s head as the head of his creation – the Monster.
The second act shows the Monster in a fighting pit surrounded by almost pantomime villains. After being discarded by the fighting pit owners, the Monster embarks on a journey of revenge, culminating in a duel with Victor Frankenstein in the Arctic.
The musical focuses on showing the humanity of Victor and his creatures, and asks the audience who is more human, Victor or the Monster?
