90 Years
you'll never walk alone performance for hillsborough survivors

This year, we’re celebrating 90 years at our multi-award-winning Ormskirk Campus. We are delighted to welcome back alumnus Tom Cain and Honorary Doctor, Professor Phil Scraton, as they take to the stage for 97+.

97+ is based on the 1989 Hillsborough Disaster, which led to 97 lives being lost. It has been written by drama graduate, Tom Cain, in collaboration with the Hillsborough Survivors Support Alliance. Set in 2012, the play focuses on Hillsborough survivors, John and Steve. Now middle aged, they are dealing with the trauma they suffered as young boys, while continuing their fight for justice.

Headshot of Professor Phil Scraton

Before the performance, renowned critical criminologist, academic and author, Professor Phil Scraton, will talk about his work on the Hillsborough campaign. For over three decades, he has worked alongside bereaved families and survivors of Hillsborough.

His initial research critiqued the Taylor inquiry, media coverage, and police insensitivity, while his later work exposed the systematic review and alteration of police statements. Phil headed the research of the Hillsborough Independent Panel and was the primary author of its 2012 report which led to the original inquest verdicts being quashed.

His talk will focus on the challenges that he and his team faced as they continued to fight for justice for the victims, survivors and families of the Hillsborough Disaster.
