Why study English at Edge Hill?
Studying English language and literature together draws on the distinctive Edge Hill tradition of combining linguistics with literary analysis. Studying English will give you the opportunity to explore how language works, as well as analysing and interpreting literary texts.
In English Language, we have particular strengths in psycholinguistics, particularly child language development; historical linguistics and sociolinguistics, including the language of Shakespeare and language, gender and sexuality; and corpus linguistics, including computer-assisted language analysis.
In literary terms, we specialise in the long eighteenth and long nineteenth centuries, especially Gothic writing, and we will also introduce you to literary periods from the Renaissance to the twenty-first century, including contemporary pop culture.
