Our students share their top tips for staying healthy at uni

My top tips for staying healthy while at university is visiting the gym each week (as a student you get a great deal for a year). I also try to go on a walk at least once a day to get some screen free time and to clear my head. In addition, I try to get some early nights to make sure that I don’t overwork or exhaust myself.

Darren (Third year BA (Hons) Teaching, Learning & Child Development)

My biggest advice would be to make time in the week for physical activities that you enjoy. There are so many different options for this – university is such a good time to start looking after yourself physically. There are so many sports teams and societies and facilities at Edge Hill Sport, for example the fitness suite, badminton, and the swimming pool. There are also so many classes which are part of your Edge Hill Sport membership such as yoga, Pilates, Zumba and boxing. With so many things to try (and a little effort) I’m sure you will find something you enjoy! It is important to find something you enjoy as it doesn’t feel like a chore on top of everything else but a stress reliever and time to yourself that makes you feel good mentally, physically and emotionally.

My second tip would be to plan out your weekly meals and think about getting ingredients to make balanced recipes when you are doing your food shop, so that you can buy food which makes you feel good and tastes nice whilst also being easy and enjoyable to cook and eat. There are always going to be days at university where you have meals which are ‘unhealthy’, and that’s fine! Just look after yourself as best you can and try to get in as much nutrition as possible.

My final tip would be to make sure you schedule in proper time for yourself – and ensuring that this time is spent completely away from work and the stresses of university life. I would recommend spending this time away from your phone and actually giving your mind a real break. Perhaps by having a long shower, reading a book you are enjoying or by meditating. It is important to treat yourself to this time and allow your time to properly switch off. This is vital for your mental health and wellbeing as so often we don’t give ourselves proper and intentional breaks.

Katie (Second year BSc (Hons) Educational Psychology)

Utilise Edge Hill Sport – There’s fantastic gym facilities available at the Sports Centre, the staff are always really friendly and helpful and you get a discount off membership as a student, which is a bonus.

Explore the University grounds – Edge Hill has some gorgeous green spaces, open seating areas and gardens where you can take a break.

Socialise! – Make the most of social events and activities across the University, have a look around events on at The Hub as well.

Alexander (Final year BSc (Hons) Computer Science student)

Don’t do too much too soon, moving to uni is a big adjustment, take some time to get used to the change.

Ask for help when you need it, there will always be support available from friends or organisations, you just have to ask.

Make use of the amazing campus facilities and the surrounding town. there are beautiful woodland areas to go for a walk in.

Hannah (Second year BA (Hons) Childhood & Youth Studies)

Sometimes it can be difficult to keep on top of your health whilst at university, but it’s so important to do so. My tips are: if you are struggling at uni it’s okay to ask for help, there are so many people there who are willing to help you, so take advantage of it. Secondly, going on walks are incredibly helpful for the mind and for the body, a 10 minute walk can do a load of good, so definitely take time for yourself. Finally, make sure you give yourself time to take breaks, these will help you throughout your time at university so you aren’t putting too much pressure on yourself.
