What happens if I let you know?
Once the referral form has been submitted, the Mental Health & Wellbeing Team will review the information provided and consider the most appropriate next steps.
There are many different actions that may be taken depending on the circumstances. Wherever possible, we will seek to act in line with the wishes of the person concerned. However, there may be occasions where we need to take action without consent if we believe there is a significant risk of harm to you or another person.
If you have completed the form about yourself, we may:
- Invite you to meet with a member of the Mental Health & Wellbeing Team to discuss your concerns and explore the support available.
- Provide information about University support services and, where appropriate, external services that may be helpful.
- Work with you to identify practical steps and support options that may improve your wellbeing and help you manage any difficulties you are experiencing.
- Contact emergency services on your behalf if we believe there is an immediate risk to your safety or the safety of others.
If you have let us know about another student that you are concerned about, we may:
- Contact the student to make them aware of the support available through the Mental Health & Wellbeing Team and encourage them to seek support.
- Invite the student to attend a wellbeing appointment.
- Provide information about additional specialist services where appropriate.
- Ask the Campus Support Team to conduct a welfare check if we have concerns about the student’s safety and wellbeing.
- Contact emergency services if we are unable to establish the student’s safety and believe there is a serious risk of harm.
Please be aware that, due to confidentiality, we may not be able to share information with you about any support offered to another student or any actions that may have been taken.
If you have let us know that you are concerned about someone’s behaviour, we may:
- Record the information you have shared and consider it alongside any other relevant information held by the University.
- Invite the individual to meet with the Mental Health & Wellbeing Team and/or the student resolutions team to discuss the concerns that have been raised.
- Share information with other relevant University departments where appropriate to ensure concerns are managed effectively.
- Contact the police or other emergency services if we have serious concerns about a person’s safety, wellbeing, or behaviour.
