Microsoft Office 365
The University can now offer access to Microsoft 365, you can download the full Office suite on up to 5 devices completely free. For more information visit IT Services pages: MS Office for Students.
Learning Services has invested in a product called Caption.Ed the app is available for our learners to use. Caption.Ed provides live automatic captions through the Google Chrome Browser. Caption.Ed can be used for live Blackboard Collaborate sessions and pre-recorded content within your Blackboard course.
You may have heard about Open Source software (which usually means it’s free), or assistive technology – tools you can add to your computer or the software you use, which makes them more adaptable and easier to use. The software shown below are Open Source applications available to download for free.
Live Captions app
When enabled on your PC, Live Captions automatically appear in a small, moveable box in the bottom of your browser when you’re watching or listening to a piece of content where people are talking.
Calibre is a free and open source e-book computer software application suite that organizes, saves and manages e-books, supporting a variety of formats. It also supports e-book syncing with a variety of popular e-book readers and will, within DRM restrictions, convert e-books between differing formats.
Your favourite apps, carried on a portable or cloud drive, works on PCs everywhere you go. PortableApps is a free portable software solution allowing you to take your favourite software with you and make every PC feel like your own. A fully open source and free platform, it works on any portable storage device.
EduApps consists of useful software collections that are free for you to download and use. The most popular of which is MyStudyBar, providing a suite of apps to support literacy.
Apache OpenOffice is the leading open-source office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases. It is available in many languages and works on all common computers. It can be downloaded and used completely free of charge for any purpose.
LibreOffice is a comprehensive, professional-quality productivity suite that you can download and install for free. LibreOffice is available in more than 30 languages and for all major operating systems, including Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and GNU/Linux.
My Computer My Way is AbilityNet’s interactive service that helps you adapt your computer to your needs – instead of expecting you to conform to the average.
It includes options such as:
Vision – help with seeing your screen
Hearing – help with sounds and audio
Motor – help with keyboard and mouse difficulties
Cognitive – help with reading, spelling and understanding
Access: YouTube simplifies the standard YouTube site, by removing extra content such as adds, comments and links which can be distracting, makes it easier for everyone to search and play videos, and allows the use of assistive technology to search for and play YouTube videos independently.
