Plan your data management

A data management plan will help ensure your data works for you and your research

Research data management is essential for responsible research conduct. Before the start of your research, you should plan how you will manage your data.

You have a professional responsibility to maximise the benefits of your research findings. This includes allowing others to access and use your research data wherever possible, in line with University policy. You should prepare to share as much of your data as openly as possible. Find out more about sharing data.

The UKRI common principles on research data should inform your data management decisions. This is especially important where data results from public funding.

You should write a data management plan to show how you will manage your data during and after the project.

Data Management Plans

A DMP is a resource for you (and your team if you have one). It helps to ensure your data are accurate, reliable, secure and reusable. It will also help you to anticipate potential issues and make strategic decisions for your research.

A DMP is a ‘live’ document: something that you will review periodically, update as necessary and refer to throughout the project. It describes

  • the data you will collect or use
  • how you will manage and store the data
  • what you will do with the data at the end of the project, i.e. whether you will preserve and/or share them.

A DMP is especially important if you are creating or using personal, confidential or sensitive data, working with human participants, or there are other legal or commercial considerations for your research.

It is University policy that all research projects have a DMP. We recommend you use the Edge Hill template unless you are applying to a specific funder. Sign in to DMPOnline with your University credentials to access templates and guidance, and get feedback on your plan.

Things to consider in data management planning

What is data?
Clarify responsibilities for data management
Ethics
Personal, sensitive and/or confidential data
Using secondary data
Copyright and Intellectual Property Rights
Costing data management
Funder and publisher policies

Sources of secondary data

If you want to access NHS patient data or systems, this is likely to come under the Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT). You must follow the University’s Standard Operating Procedure, which includes becoming a member of the Health Research Institute (HRI) and undertaking information security training annually. Please see the HRI SharePoint for further information (Edge Hill only).

You can obtain this data through an API either directly from the platform itself or via a reseller. The data may include individual posts, comments, photos, videos, networking connections, social interactions, or data on ratings, trends, interests or likes/dislikes.

Note that social media data are protected by copyright and platforms may restrict how you can use them. Make sure you familiarise yourself with their terms.
