Who is this module for?

The purpose of this module is to provide a route from all fields of nursing (Adult, Child, Learning Disability, Mental Health) to meet the requirements to effectively return to the Nursing and Midwifery Council Register.

To be eligible to apply, you must hold a registration (lapsed) with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and have the ability to update the necessary numeracy and literacy skills required to meet the professional programme requirements.

What are the key aims of the module?

This module will provide the necessary components (practice and theoretical learning) to enable Registered Nurses with lapsed NMC Registration to return to the professional register.

How will I study?

This module will be delivered using a blended learning approach with a mix of campus-based learning, online learning, simulation-based education, peer group learning and directed study. Students will be required to attend practice for a minimum of 150 practice hours and maximum of 360 practice hours in total. Duration of module: Flexible part-time. Minimum of 17 weeks, maximum of 40 weeks.

What will I study?

The key areas that will be covered within this module include:

  • revisiting professionalism and The Code: Professional standards of practice and behaviour for nurses, midwives and nursing associates (NMC, 2018)
  • consent and capacity
  • critical reflective skills, self-awareness, resilience/wellbeing and identification of own professional development needs
  • numeracy skills & digital literacy
  • patient safety, human factors and safeguarding
  • pharmacology/medicine optimisation
  • communication and relationship management
  • person-centred care and safe discharge planning
  • working in multi-disciplinary/inter-disciplinary teams
  • evidence based practice and Public Health
  • leadership styles, NHS Leadership framework, Quality Improvement Methodology

How will I be assessed?

There will be a range of formative assessment opportunities within the module to prepare students for summative assessment and practice learning.

Formative Assessments:

  • Online numeracy assessment and education e-learning.
  • Peer group online learning activities (online reading) and discussions.
  • Peer presentation of evidence-based practice for informal feedback.
  • Reflective practice group discussion to enhance reflective skills and peer learning.
  • Assessment preparation using group and online activities.
  • Simulation Based Education to enable students to safely practice a range of clinical and professional skills.

 

Summative Assessments:
The summative assessment has two elements. Students will need to pass both required summative elements to be able to apply to the NMC for professional re-registration.

Part One: Practice Learning
Achievement of practice proficiencies aligned to the student’s specific professional registration.

Part Two: Coursework
A written assignment (2,000 words) examining an aspect of evidence-based practice that has an impact on patient safety.

How to apply

Return to Practice programmes are funded by Health Education England (HEE) and you will also be eligible to apply for a £1000 stipendiary payment towards childcare, travel and book costs and more.

If you are already employed within the healthcare sector as a Healthcare Assistant, you may wish to discuss with your organisation if there is an option to be supported with Employer led Return to Practice.

Programme availability varies from year to year and will be subject to minimum student numbers being achieved. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Due to the popularity of the programme it may be that the programme is fully booked when your application is received.
