Managing and Developing Medical Education CPD4708

Overview

This module will offer students the opportunity to study key areas in managing and developing medical education in the healthcare workplace, namely curriculum design, the selection of methods and approaches to delivering teaching that are congruent with, and appropriately aligned to, the curriculum and quality management through the evaluation of educational provision.

CPD4708 aims to meet the needs of clinical educators in senior educational roles, such as Training Programme Director, or those who are aspiring to take on such roles in the future.

You will build on earlier studies in educational theory, such as approaches to teaching, learning and assessment to study how knowledge of these applies to the practice of educational leaders and managers.

Who is this module for?

The module is suitable for dentists, medical consultants, higher speciality trainees and non-consultant career-grade doctors. Other professionals who are involved in the management and development of clinical education may also be interested.

This module is normally taken as part of a PGCert or Master’s programme. If you are considering studying the module as a stand-alone course, you must first speak to the module leader to ensure this is appropriate for you.

What are the key aims of the module?

  • To explore the principles of curriculum design and course management in medical education.
  • To consider issues pertinent to student support and evaluation.
  • To enhance the ability of the participants to select appropriate approaches and methods of teaching and learning within medical education.
  • To provide a context in which participants can review their own continuing professional development as educational leaders.

How will I study?

This module is delivered through a blend of asynchronous, structured online learning and three half-day workshop sessions. The workshop sessions take place on campus.

This module offers an opportunity to explore key concepts related to managing and developing postgraduate medical education in the workplace, including:

  • Curriculum design principles,
  • Professional standards,
  • Addressing learners’ needs,
  • Selecting appropriate teaching approaches.

Course management through:

  • Quality assurance,
  • Evaluation,
  • Quality control.

How will I be assessed?

There are no exams on this module. At the end of the module, you are required to submit two pieces of academic work to demonstrate your achievement of the module learning outcomes:

  • A case study of special interest (to be negotiated and agreed with your module tutor). 2,500 words. 60% of module grade.
  • A critical analysis* of a teaching resource (*grounded in module studies). 1,500 words. 40% of module grade.

To successfully complete the module, you will also be required to complete a series of compulsory on-line discussion activities.

Successful completion of this module will enable you to critically analyse and explore a range of issues in managing and developing the educational experience in postgraduate medical education.

You will enhance your skills in selecting educational approaches, developing educator colleagues and evaluating educational provision for quality assurance. Module studies will provide you the opportunity to review your own professional development needs as an educator and to plan relevant and appropriate activities to meet those identified needs.

Module availability varies from year to year and will be subject to minimum student numbers being achieved. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Due to the popularity of some modules it may be that the module is fully booked when your application is received. We will include your details on a waiting list and allocate you a place on the next available intake.

We encourage you to apply as early as possible to give you the best chance to obtain a place on your preferred cohort, module applications will close as soon as the module is full. Applications received within two weeks of the start date may have to be considered for a later cohort.
