Developing Research Capabilities for Advanced Surgical Care Practice HEA4521

Overview

This is a core module for year 2 of the MSc in Surgical Care Practice (SCP) course and focuses largely on critical appraisal, evidence-based practice, and research/quality improvement in health and/or social care.

This module includes the critical analysis and synthesis of complex problems across a range of settings, enabling Trainee Surgical Care Practitioners to develop appropriate knowledge, understanding and skills to effect innovative solutions that enhance person-centred care and improve health outcomes.

Who is this module for?

This module can only be studied as part of the MSc in Surgical Care Practice course.

This module will be valuable to practitioners undertaking the MSc in Surgical Care Practice and who are employed in that role by Surgical Directorates.

What are the key aims of the module?

The overall aim of the design and content is to create a rich, stimulating, relevant, easily accessible, Trainee Surgical Care Practitioner centred learning environment and a community of learners and practice that enriches the Trainee Surgical Care Practitioners’ experience.

What will I study?

  • Critical appraisal and synthesis of evidence underpinning own/others practice
  • Strengthening the evidence base to inform enhancement of practice/service delivery
  • Ethics/governance/safety
  • Applying for funding
  • Sampling / design / reliability / validity
  • Qualitative / quantitative research methodologies
  • Quality improvement theory and methodologies – audit, service improvement etc.
  • Quality improvement frameworks/measures

Patient safety 

  • Cost effectiveness/value for money
  • Data governance/systematic documentation processes
  • Analytics/problem solving
  • Dissemination of best practice through variety of media and diverse audiences
  • Translation to practice and transformation agendas

How will I be assessed?

The academic assessment for the module consists of one element:

  • A structured project proposal detailing the design and execution of a quality improvement project within the individual’s scope of practice (4,000 words).

On successful completion you will:

You’ll be equipped and prepared to undertake the HEA4518 – Research Inquiry For Advanced Surgical Care Practice.
