Who is this module for?
This module can only be studied as part of the MSc in Surgical Care Practice course.
This module will be valuable to practitioners undertaking the MSc in Surgical Care Practice and who are employed in that role by Surgical Directorates.
What are the key aims of the module?
Achievement of the Clinical skills and capabilities from phase one of the Curriculum framework for the Surgical Care Practitioner (RCSEd and RCSEng, 2022).
These include the following 18 capabilities in practice:
- Basic sciences, clinical methods in surgical practice, perioperative practice, critical care, core clinical capabilities i.e. history taking, clinical examination, diagnosis and treatment, procedural skills, intraoperative skills, skin and wound care management, infection prevention and control, pain management, health promotion, frailty, discharge planning, management of the dying patient, management of the vulnerable patient, outpatient department practice, core critical conditions in surgery and professional skills.
The students will use the Pebblepad platform as a repository for experiential learning, providing structure, formative feedback and summative assessment to inform professional development;
The module is a PASS/FAIL summative assessment, mapped to the clinical capabilities in the phase 1 syllabus of the core documents. To achieve a pass, individuals must evidence the development of their competence and capabilities in practice in a variety of situations and case complexity in each capability and relevant pillars/domains. The e-portfolio will be submitted at the end of phase 1 which is the end of the 2nd year of the programme.
The development of Trainee Surgical Care Practitioners (TSCPs) requires a suitable Workplace-based Learning Environment (WLE) that is conducive to the development of competencies and core capabilities, specific to the SCP’s job role. TSCPs will be supported in their academic and practice development by the University SCP programme team, a workplace-based Educational Supervisor (ES) and a variety of Clinical Supervisors (CS).
A Learning Partnership Agreement (LPA) will be developed between the ES and TSCP, which sets out the specific aims and learning outcomes for this module and aligns with the key criteria required for the completion of SCP training and the wider drivers. Regular feedback should be provided by the ES and the CS regarding progress in training as part of educational review meetings every 12 weeks. Supporting high-quality relationships, the TSCP will work closely within the wider multidisciplinary team to gain experience and develop competence and capabilities in a variety of settings throughout the patient’s surgical journey, and to support the development of a wide range of generic clinical and technical capabilities.
How will I study?
