It’s the way that you say it
Psychology Professor Geoff Beattie’s research challenges conventional theories of body language by suggesting that while gesture is an integral part of speech, it can, at times, convey a different core message that the speaker is unaware of.

Research facilities
Our brain-imaging research is supported by a new electroencephalography (EEG) system, brain stimulation (tDCS and TMS) devices, and a functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) system. We also have four eye-tracking machines, three systems for recording physiological responses (BioPac), a pain simulator (DS8R Digitimer Constant Current Stimulator), and a Human Tissue Lab. Finally, we have a new Observation suite, a new Virtual Reality suite (Oculus Rift and HTC Vive Pro), a 3D-printing lab (Ultimaker) and a new ‘Bar’ Laboratory, which allows for the simulation of real-life drinking environments. Our students are encouraged to use our research facilities throughout their course, and particularly in their final year dissertation projects.
