Operating Department Practice


A lecturer supervises a student operating department practitioner as she helps a patient to breathe using a bag and mask technique.Our accredited Operating Department Practice (ODP) degree equips you with the expertise required to work in the anaesthetic, surgical and recovery phases of perioperative care as part of a multi-disciplinary operating theatre team.

Operating department practitioners are typically responsible for assisting patients before surgery, preparing specialist equipment and drugs, working alongside the surgeon, providing the correct surgical instruments and materials, and assessing and monitoring patients during recovery.
