Operating Department Practice

Overview

Two student operating department practitioners prepare an IV solution with a tutor looking on.Our accredited Operating Department Practice (ODP) degree equips you with the expertise required to work in the anaesthetic, surgical and recovery phases of perioperative care as part of a multi-disciplinary operating theatre team.

Operating department practitioners are typically responsible for assisting patients before surgery, preparing specialist equipment and drugs, working alongside the surgeon, providing the correct surgical instruments and materials, and assessing and monitoring patients during recovery.

You can choose to study our ODP degree at the Edge Hill University campus or St James’ in Manchester.

Courses

In addition to the above degree which enables you to train as an operating department practitioner, we also offer a professional development programme for qualified ODPs.

Facilities

The clinical skills facilities at Edge Hill University include ward simulations and operating theatres with industry standard equipment, as well as robot-style mannequins that can simulate a wide range of symptoms, from pregnancy to a temperature.

The facilities at St James’ in Manchester include a mock operating theatre, ambulance simulator and clinical skills stations. A 3D immersive simulation suite enables you to practice clinical scenarios in a realistic, supportive and safe environment.

Open Days and Virtual Events
