How do you use my data in Pure?
How well does Pure meet accessibility guidelines?

Who can use Pure?
Anyone can browse the repository but not everyone can log in to create or edit content.
There are several user roles in Pure. Members of Edge Hill may hold more than one:
- User – someone with a Pure user account (log in rights):
- Current academic staff.
- Current doctoral research degree students inc. GTAs/Doctoral Tutors.
- Certain support staff.
- Person – someone internal to EHU who can be associated to (i.e. named on) content in Pure but who will not necessarily have a user account.
- Current or former academic staff.
- Current or former doctoral research degree students inc. GTAs/Doctoral Tutors.
- Personal user – a current Person with a Pure user account.
- Editor – a user with enhanced rights in the system. Used as a catch-all term here to include:
- Reporter – has the ability to generate, view, edit and share reports on certain content in Pure for specific organisational units.
- Editor – as per Reporter but with additional rights to approve or edit certain content for specific organisational units.
- Administrator – has rights beyond Editor, applicable to all organisational units. May be a content administrator (for specific content types) or a system administrator (for the entire system).
How do I get log-in access to Pure?
- Academic staff can log in to Pure using their normal EHU log-in details. ‘Academic’ in this case is defined as the person’s HESA academic employment function being either teaching and research or research only.
- Doctoral research degree students can log in to Pure using their normal EHU student log-in details.
- GTAs and Doctoral Tutors are considered students for this.
- Research assistants and technicians may not be on eligible academic contracts (as above) so would not automatically have a Pure account, in part because we need to prioritise Pure licences for active, independent researchers. If your head of department makes a case that you are an independent researcher in your capacity as an Edge Hill employee, we can have an account created. This should only be where you need a public Pure profile and will be named on content.
- Support staff do not automatically have access. Because support staff can only access Pure if they have editor rights, which grant access to other people’s data, they are assigned user rights by the Research Office following confirmation from the Head of Department that such access is appropriate. Please ask your HoD to complete the Pure editor rights request form on the Research wiki .
I am an AT. Can I have a Pure account?
Unfortunately not, because the Associate Tutor role is specifically a teaching role.
How can I get editor rights?
Because editor rights (as defined above) grant access to other people’s data, your Head of Department needs to confirm the appropriate level of access to the Research Office. The best method is for them to complete the Pure editor rights request form on the Research wiki .
Editor rights will not be assigned to student users.
I have encountered an error message when trying to log in
If you are in a role at Edge Hill that should have user access to Pure (see above) but you receive an error message instead, please click on the relevant link to the wiki provided in the message and report the error.
We will investigate and respond as soon as possible.
How can I report a system error with Pure?

What training is available?
General training for staff will be bookable through MyView. These are practical training sessions in computer rooms.
General training for students will be promoted by the Graduate School.
If you would like to arrange training for your department (or other group of users) please contact us .
Editors and reporters will be offered training on a group or individual basis or on request.
Who updates my profile in Pure?
You are able to update your own profile in Pure (see the user guide, ‘Edit Your Person Profile’). Your department may have an editor tasked with supporting you in this, but you would still need to produce the information for them to paste, and you know your profile better than anyone.
Staff: your current post
Your current post and department is sourced from the HR Information System. Only permanent and fixed term academic posts are imported into Pure, therefore any Associate Tutor, Visiting Lecturer or non-academic roles you have had will not come through (please see the user guide on editing your profile for advice on how you can manually add these).
Post title changes that occur while you are in post (e.g. relating to a departmental name change) will not come through to Pure, and the post title shown is your last known job title in the post.
If your current job title is incorrect, you can notify HR by completing the Job Title Change Form on MyView.
Staff: previous posts
In April 2019, academic post histories (going back to 2010) were imported from staff records to help complete profiles but the synchronisation with this data was later disabled, meaning you can edit some imported information on previous posts if it was incorrect. Students: your course details
Your organisational unit affiliation displays as your home faculty. This, your name, mode, course title, etc. cannot be changed in Pure because it comes straight from your student record. If any details need to change please follow the usual procedures for updating your record through the Graduate School/Academic Registry.
Do I need to maintain both my website profile and my Pure profile?
In 2020 (date TBC), your Pure profile will begin to populate your academic profile on the EHU website, so Pure will be the only place you need to go to update your profile.
More information will be provided soon but the sooner departments can confirm their Pure profiles are up to date, the sooner this change can occur: please update your Pure profile as soon as you can.
I need to hide my profile from the public
Profiles of current staff and doctoral research degree students are public by default. After they leave, their profiles are automatically hidden.
If there is good reason to hide your profile while you are still at Edge Hill, ask your head of department to e-mail us, confirming that the situation is serious enough that there is a genuine need to hide your public profile.
This can only be done in exceptional circumstances, not due to personal preference.
This will only hide your person profile; your content (outputs, etc.) will remain publicly visible.
Can I find staff from other universities on the portal?
While Edge Hill’s instance of Pure does not house profiles from other institutions, it is possible to find profiles from other institutions’ Pure where their profiles match your search term (e.g. where their Pure fingerprint shares ‘concepts’ with your own).
This is particularly useful for identifying possible collaborators and is done through the Expert Community feature:
- Go to Profiles.
- Search e.g. for a keyword, concept, expertise.
- You will get internal results; to view external matches, toggle ‘Switch to Experts Community search’ on.
- Click on people of interest to be taken to their person profile on their institution’s instance of Pure.
Results will not be exhaustive: external profiles will only appear if the person’s institution has agreed to share their profiles with the Pure Experts Community.
EHU profiles can be found the same way from other portals in the Experts Community, helping to make your profile more discoverable.
Someone has proposed an output for the REF on my behalf!
If you did not propose the output for the REF, it will normally show in your proposals for one of two reasons:
- We imported all outputs under consideration for the REF from the old research repository when we launched Pure in spring 2019.
- Your EHU co-author has proposed the output in Pure since spring 2019.
If these are not outputs you would have proposed for your UoA, you do not need to take any action. When one author proposes an output, they automatically propose it for all of their co-authors at EHU. Your UoA Co-ordinators will review the proposal and omit it from the UoA’s submission if necessary, although it will remain in your list of proposals.
If these are outputs you would have proposed for your UoA, you should edit the proposal to provide your reason, ranking, etc. to help selection decisions.
What do the open access compliance statuses mean on output/REF2 records?
If an output is subject to the open access policy based on the information entered into Pure, it can have one of five OA statuses:
- Indeterminate: the output is not yet compliant but could be if deposited or made accessible in time, or if a valid exception is applied.
- REF OA compliance MET: the output is compliant based on the metadata provided. This could be due to an exception having been applied.
- REF OA compliance NOT MET – confirm exception applicability: the output is not compliant based on the metadata provided but could be if there is a valid exception to be applied.
- NOT compliant – confirmed: the output is not compliant based on the metadata provided and no valid exception can be applied to it.
- No full publication date input: the e-pub or publication date on the record is incomplete, so status cannot be confirmed.
What’s the difference between the exceptions, No value and No Exception?
No value simply means an exception has not been applied, whether one is needed or not.
No Exception is explicit confirmation that no valid exception can be applied and the output is not compliant.
What is the ‘student thesis’ content type?
This allows you to deposit your own doctoral thesis, should you wish to do so – as long as it was awarded by Edge Hill University.
If your doctorate was awarded by another university, the awarding institution should already have your thesis on its repository so you could include a link to there in your profile instead of submitting it to Pure. If you want a record of your thesis on your EHU Pure profile, you can create a project record.
You can only deposit your own thesis. You cannot deposit theses on behalf of your students.
I have received an ‘Expert contact request’ from what looks like an external Pure e-mail address. Is it legitimate?
There is a ‘contact expert’ button below your photo on your public profile. If someone clicks it to contact you, they don’t see your e-mail address but instead need to fill out a form and pass a recaptcha test before they can send their message to you. You receive that message in an e-mail from email@example.com.
By choosing to reply to that e-mail, you will send an e-mail to the original sender and they will see your e-mail address at that point.
The form and recaptcha add hurdles for potential spammers/bots, but it also means your e-mail address is not exposed through the portal. All this minimises the chances that you will receive spam through Pure but remember: no solution is 100% effective.
We do not receive a copy of messages submitted through the system so cannot verify their authenticity.
You should take care with any e-mail that originates from outside the University to make sure the Purehosted e-mail has not been spoofed, or the message itself doesn’t contain malicious links or other content. See the general e-mail/web safety advice on the IT Services wiki.
I can’t update one of my research outputs because it is locked for the REF!
If your output is under consideration for the REF, you will not be able to update most of the details. Although Library & Learning Services manage outputs, they cannot update REF records either so, if you need to change the metadata on them – e.g. add a publication date – you will need to contact the Research Office on firstname.lastname@example.org.
