“I’m constantly drawing on what I learned at Edge Hill in my role as a Graduate Buying Assistant.”
After graduating last year with a first class degree in accountancy, Tope Sadiku is using her knowledge on Asda’s Graduate Buying Scheme.
“I’m constantly drawing on what I learned at Edge Hill in my role as a Graduate Buying Assistant. I’m now putting into practice the things that I’ve studied, like balance sheets and profit and loss accounts. At first it was slightly overwhelming, getting my head around nine-figure balances, but the scale of variation and intricacy is exciting.
Before I graduated I received a lot of support from Edge Hill’s careers service. As well as gaining advice from the Careers Service, I also did the Institute of Leadership and Management’s employability module, which is an additional, optional course designed to boost employability.
That was a great experience because it prepared me for assessment days and graduate level interviews.
Although on the surface an accountancy degree seems to be focused on one specific area, my course opened up numerous opportunities in the world of business. Not only did it help me secure a place on this scheme, but I am now using what I learned every day. Modules such as Strategy and Decision Making help when we plan future ranges and negotiate with suppliers, International Finance Reports prepared me for converting figures from foreign currencies to UK GBP, and Accounting for the Environment was important as ASDA is focused on corporate responsibility.
My degree was definitely a good preparation for my career so far.”
