BSc (Hons) Business and Economics

For me, the best aspect of Edge Hill is the comprehensive support available to students, whether academic, professional, or personal.
I chose to study business and economics because of the subject’s broad and interdisciplinary nature. It not only explores how resources are managed and distributed across economies but also provides insight into the core principles of business operations and strategic decision-making. This combination of macroeconomic perspective and practical business acumen aligned well with my interests and future career ambitions.
The first thing that struck me about Edge Hill was the vibrant, green campus. It immediately created a welcoming and inspiring environment. Beyond the physical setting, what truly set Edge Hill apart was the approachability and supportiveness of the academic staff. From the very beginning, it was clear that this was a community where students are genuinely supported.
I enjoy the balance between theoretical frameworks and their real-world application. The course doesn’t just focus on abstract economic or business concepts, it also integrates current issues and practical case studies, making learning both relevant and engaging.
My lecturers have been incredibly supportive throughout my studies. They’re consistently approachable and willing to make time for students, regardless of the size or complexity of the issue. Their guidance has not only helped me succeed academically but also built my confidence in tackling professional challenges.
One standout opportunity was the employability module, which provided me with hands-on work experience. I completed my placement at Kas Social, a local business committed to community-focused and environmentally conscious initiatives. As a Green Tourism assistant, I contributed to Kas Social’s application and achievement of a silver Green Tourism Award, a certification programme that recognises businesses for their commitment to environmental sustainability, in collaboration with West Lancashire Borough Council. This experience allowed me to directly apply classroom knowledge to a real-world setting, deepening my understanding of sustainable business practices and the importance of cross-sector collaboration. It also affirmed my passion for working in purpose-driven environments and reinforced my commitment to contributing to positive change through responsible business.
My placement at Kas Social played a significant role in developing both my professional competencies and personal confidence. I gained practical experience in a dynamic, purpose-driven organisation and enhanced key employability skills such as leadership, teamwork, autonomy, and time management. One of the highlights was representing my experience at the Edge Hill University Placement Showcase, where I delivered a presentation to peers, staff, and industry professionals. This not only improved my public speaking and communication abilities but also helped me build valuable connections and reflect meaningfully on my learning journey.
For me, the best aspect of Edge Hill is the comprehensive support available to students, whether academic, professional, or personal. The University offers countless growth opportunities, from employability support to extracurricular activities. I’ve been actively involved in both the volleyball and equestrian teams, which have contributed greatly to my personal development and university experience.
After graduation, I aim to gain further hands-on experience in the hospitality sector, particularly in management and leadership roles. I’m passionate about ethical and sustainable sourcing in the culinary and agricultural industries, and I hope to contribute to organisations that prioritise responsible practices in these fields.
I would advise someone considering studying business and economics at Edge Hill to take full advantage of the resources available to you and never hesitate to ask questions, whether you’re looking to clarify something academically or seek advice on how to improve and self-develop. Engaging actively with staff and services can really enhance your learning and personal journey. I’ve regularly made use of the Careers Team, who have been instrumental in helping me enhance my CV, prepare for placements and internships, and develop effective interview techniques. Their ongoing support has played a vital role in helping me prepare for the next steps in my career.
