MBChB Medicine - Research internship student
It throws you in at the deep end and helps you consolidate the information you learn in Years 1 and 2.
I wanted to join the Summer Internship Programme because research is something I have previously struggled with and wanted to improve. With a research-focused exam coming up in Year 3, I felt that completing an internship would be a great opportunity to strengthen my understanding and gain practical experience.
My internship focused on data analysis and writing up a research paper. Throughout the project, I learned how to use statistical software called R and developed my understanding of a range of statistical tests. Having the opportunity to apply these skills in a real research setting helped me build confidence and gain a much deeper understanding of research methods.
One of the aspects I enjoyed most was researching the different diagnoses included in the study. Exploring the background literature helped me understand the wider context of the research and appreciate how evidence is used to inform healthcare practice.
The biggest challenge was understanding the statistical tests I was being asked to carry out and learning how to translate them into formulas that could be used within the software. While challenging at times, working through these problems helped me develop my analytical skills and improve my confidence when approaching complex data.
The internship gave me valuable experience of the research process and helped me consolidate knowledge from the early years of my medical degree. It also provided practical skills that I can apply throughout the rest of my studies and future career.
I would highly recommend applying for the Summer Internship Programme because it throws you in at the deep end and helps you consolidate the information you learn in Years 1 and 2. It is a fantastic opportunity to develop your research skills, build confidence and gain experience of working on a real research project.
