Can you tell us about your background (education and or career to date?) And what inspired you to pursue a PGCE, what was it about Edge Hill University that attracted you?

I have a B.A in Political Studies and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education. I was motivated to teach after my national service as a Teaching Assistant in the Political Science Department of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. I taught at the Primary School Level for 13 years and later taught “Government” for 2 years at the Secondary Level before starting my PGCE. I was drawn to the university’s strong reputation for teacher training and the emphasis placed on combining academic study with real classroom experience, which I felt will prepare me well for my teaching career.

 

How did you hear about us?

I heard about Edge Hill University from my friend, who is a past student of this great university.

 

What’s your favourite thing about your degree?

My favourite thing about PGCE is the placements. It combines theory with practice which provides a hands-on experience to students. I will gain a lot of practical skills and experience in the classroom, enjoy learning new teaching strategies that can be implemented in my future classroom to impact pupils learning.

 

How have your lecturers helped you during your degree?

My lecturers are very supportive, providing clear guidance on teaching strategies and curriculum. They are always available to answer questions. This has boosted my confidence and readiness to go on my first placement.

 

How has your subject knowledge improved to date?

My subject knowledge has improved through a deeper engagement with research, evidence- informed practice and curriculum. The extensive reading I have done for my assignments has deepened my understanding, turning me into the reflective teacher I aspire to become.

 

How will you implement your learning within your professional practice whilst on placement?

Whiles on my placement, I will apply the teaching strategies and theories by adopting differentiated instructions that will meet the learning needs of my pupils. I will also reflect on feedback from my mentor to improve my classroom experience. It would also accelerate my path to professional growth and enable me to work in leadership and specialist roles in education. I intend to pursue a career as a primary teacher who will make a positive impact in the learning and development of young pupils.

 

What opportunities do you think this degree give you? What career do you intend to pursue?

This degree will give me the opportunity to gain qualified teacher status and develop my skill to effectively teach in a diverse classroom. I intend to pursue a career as a primary teacher who will make a positive impact in the learning and development of young pupils.

 

How will your degree enhance your employability?

A degree in PGCE will provide me with practical classroom from my placements and up-to-date knowledge of teaching strategies and curriculum requirement.

 

What’s the best thing about Edge Hill University to you?

Edge Hill University stands unique to me because of the supportive environment it provides to its students. I am amazed at its beautiful library and modern classroom facilities that ensure learning takes place in a serene and quiet environment.

 

What do you hope to do when you graduate?

I hope to be a reflective primary school teacher who will make a positive impact in the development and growth of pupils and use the skills I will gain to demonstrate the quality and high standard of training i received at Edge Hill University, showing those around me that, choosing Edge Hill university was the best decision I ever made in life.

 

What advice would you give to someone considering studying this degree at Edge Hill?

I will advise anyone planning to study at the university to make Edge Hill their home, as the university has all it takes to make students the best version of themselves.

 

In what ways has Edge Hill supported you during your degree (e.g., academic support, wellbeing services, careers guidance)?

In the few weeks i have been on campus, my lecturers have given me one of the best academic experiences of my life. They are always ready to provide me with the resources needed for assignments. When i was feeling homesick, wellbeing team supported me through my distress.

 

How have you adapted to studying and teaching in a new cultural context?

I have adopted an open-mindedness to embrace new perspectives, build strong and respectful relationships, develop cultural awareness through research and respect and understand local norms and traditions.

 

Have you felt a sense of community at Edge Hill? What helped you feel included?

Yes, the sense of belongingness I feel even in my class is heart-warming. I feel accepted, respected and valued in the class and school as a whole. Everyone is ready to help me settle in, right from the administration, my lectures and my course mates.
