Megan Cox
BSc (Hons) Midwifery

I was told early on that this course will change you as a person, and it has, for the better. The experiences I have had and the skills I have acquired will forever shape who I am.
My interest towards women’s health and mental wellbeing led me to build upon this inspiration and find midwifery. Growing up my mum would tell me about her amazing experiences with maternity care, she would tell me about the midwives and her care in detail, I found it inspiring that these women will always be remembered and have made such a profound impact. I have always been curious about healthcare but was unsure of what career to aim for. I attended an open day at Edge Hill and studying midwifery felt like the next step in my journey, midwifery is a wonderful course which leads to a career with so much potential and career progression.
Edge Hill stood out to me as the place I want to be. The gorgeous campus and accommodation first drew me in but I was won over by the lectures and their teaching.
The teaching that I have received is holistic towards educational needs and individualised to the cohort. I knew that I would receive the best opportunity to thrive, and almost 3 years on I can now say that I was right.
Effective communication skills, critical thinking, organisational skills. These are the three main skills that I have developed during my degree.
The most memorable moment of my degree so far was achieving my 40th birth. The midwives surprised me with a sash and funny homemade hat to celebrate.
My favourite thing about midwifery is the personal journey that this course takes you on. I was told early on that this course will change you as a person, and it has, for the better. The experiences I have had and the skills I have acquired will forever shape who I am.
The best thing about Edge Hill University to me, is the people. The friends made I will have for life and the lectures I will forever miss.
I have had the opportunity as a third year to contribute in teaching the first year midwifery cohort. I hope I will have the opportunity to come back after qualifying to not only teach and meet the first years again but to visit Edge Hill.
I hope to have a job as a newly qualified midwife in a trust that has a great preceptorship programme. I aim to be a midwife that is holistic, compassionate, knowledgeable, a good teacher and one that will make myself proud.
If you’re thinking about studying midwifery at Edge Hill, I’d say go for it. But be ready to give it your all. It’s an intense, hands-on course that really immerses you in both the academic and clinical sides of the profession. Make sure you’re prepared for long hours, emotional moments, and a steep learning curve, but also some of the most rewarding experiences you’ll ever have.
My advice is to stay organized, lean on your cohort for support, and never be afraid to ask questions. If you’re passionate about caring for women and families, you’ll find your place here.
Edge Hill has been incredibly supportive throughout my degree. The lecturers are not only knowledgeable but also genuinely approachable—they always make time to help, whether it’s with academic work or placement concerns. The university also offers great wellbeing services, which have really helped me stay balanced during stressful times. I’ve always felt like there’s someone to turn to, and that’s made a big difference in building my confidence and keeping me motivated
