BSc Marketing with Advertising and MA Marketing Communications alumni Matthew Highton

"My degree has helped me to become a dynamic marketer and has provided me with the confidence to embark on many roles within this industry."

I always aspired to work in Business-to-Business marketing due to the fascinating evolving nature of the environment. During my degree at Edge Hill University, I studied various modules relating to advertising, strategic brand management, and, public relations and reputation management.

I gained relevant knowledge in relation to models, theories, and frameworks which I now apply daily in my work. Particularly, social media monitoring and analytics always interested me, and I can now apply my well-grounded theoretical knowledge to practical situations.

I also gained invaluable transferable skills to enhance my employability. These included, the communicating clearly and succinctly to work well independently and as part of a team with a diverse range of people. On top of this, I also had the opportunity to complete a placement at Preston City Council in the Communications and Marketing department and gained invaluable international work experience during the summer of 2019 at Camp America in North Carolina.

My current role predominantly involves working on highly regarded SME engagement productivity. As Project Support Officer (Marketing), I work specifically within the Faculty’s Employability, Enterprise, Entrepreneurship and, Innovation (E3i) function at Edge Hill University.

I work on marketing engagement for the region’s growth and productivity agenda, throughout the Lancashire and Liverpool City Region. The Productivity and Innovation Centre is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) to provide innovation support and advisory services to SMEs.

My day-to-day responsibilities include varied activates. These include driving impact from marketing and publicity activities whilst simultaneously supporting business development compliance. My key responsibility is supporting activities that raise the profile of the centre through the dissemination of key messages and assets including electronic, social, and print media and through events.

I have the opportunity to develop a thorough knowledge and experience of a modern university’s business process. This is particularly demonstrated in my responsibility for the management of a CRM system, email campaigns, and data cleansing.

Edge Hill University has prepared me for the world of work, and I have acquired invaluable transferable skills which I have taken forward into future employment. My degree has helped me to become a dynamic marketer and has provided me with the confidence to embark on many roles within this industry. I have never looked back since completing my degree.
