Alongside Microsoft Office Specialist certifications in Word, Excel and PowerPoint, I achieved four Microsoft Certified Fundamentals certifications. These qualifications complemented the knowledge I gained through my degree and continue to support me in my current role, particularly when working with Microsoft Azure technologies.

I was inspired to study Computer Science because I enjoyed the logical way of thinking that it encourages. During sixth form, I began teaching myself programming and exploring data analysis in my own time, and I quickly realised it was a subject that suited both my interests and the way I approach problem-solving.

Although I had not studied Computing at school, I found the challenge of understanding how technology works and using it to solve real-world problems particularly rewarding. The breadth of the degree also appealed to me, as it offered the opportunity to develop skills across software engineering, databases, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and data science before discovering where my interests lay most. Throughout the course, I developed a particular passion for data and AI, which ultimately led me towards my current career as a Data Scientist.

One of my favourite aspects of studying Computer Science at Edge Hill was the range of resources and opportunities available beyond lectures. Having access to the 24/7 library, alongside a wide collection of physical and online academic resources, allowed me to explore topics in greater depth and continue developing my understanding outside of the curriculum.

I also valued the opportunity to gain industry-recognised Microsoft certifications during my studies.

The most valuable skills I gained from my degree were creative problem-solving, analytical thinking and the ability to learn independently. Throughout the course, I learned that solving a problem is only the first step; understanding why a solution works, exploring different approaches and considering alternative ways of achieving an outcome are equally important. This helped me develop a more thoughtful approach to problem-solving rather than simply aiming for the first correct answer.

The degree also strengthened my ability to break complex problems into manageable parts, evaluate different solutions and adapt to new technologies. These skills have been particularly valuable in a field such as data science, where continuous learning and the ability to approach unfamiliar challenges are essential.

Alongside my studies, Edge Hill also provided opportunities to develop my professional skills. I worked as a Student Guide, where I regularly met and spoke with prospective students and their families. This experience significantly improved my confidence, communication skills and ability to introduce myself professionally, all of which have been valuable in the workplace.

My route into Data Science came through a combination of preparation, performance and taking opportunities when they arose. For one summer, I worked in an administrative role where I was able to demonstrate my skills and build strong relationships across the organisation. This led to opportunities to work with and learn from different technology teams, where I discovered that I particularly enjoyed working with data. Following this experience, I secured a part-time role alongside my third year of university, allowing me to gain practical industry experience while completing my degree. This progressed into a full-time Data Scientist position at Skipton Building Society in April, providing a smooth transition from university into my career.

In my current role as a Data Scientist in Skipton, located in the Yorkshire Dales, no two days are the same, which is one of the things that makes the role so enjoyable. A typical day involves working with large datasets, preparing and analysing data, and developing models that help the business make better-informed decisions. Alongside the technical work, I spend time working with stakeholders to understand their requirements and explain how data science can support their objectives. An important part of the role is communicating technical concepts in a way that is accessible to different audiences, ensuring that the solutions we develop are both practical and aligned with business needs.

My favourite part of being a Data Scientist is that the role is about much more than the technology itself. While developing models and working with data are important, understanding the business, the challenges it faces and what the data is really telling us is equally valuable. Every project gives me the opportunity to learn something new, whether that is about a different area of the organisation, a new dataset or a different technical approach.

Looking ahead, my goal is to continue developing my skills as a Data Scientist while expanding my understanding of how data and technology can be used to solve wider business challenges. As I gain more experience, I hope to take on greater responsibility, contribute to larger projects and continue developing both my technical and communication skills. I am also considering undertaking a master’s degree part-time soon, as I enjoy continuing to learn and want to challenge myself further alongside my professional development.

My biggest piece of advice for students considering Computer Science at Edge Hill would be to make the most of every opportunity and resource available to you. Whether it is using the library and online research resources, gaining additional certifications or getting involved in activities outside of your studies, these experiences can make a real difference to both your confidence and your future career. Regardless of your previous experience or confidence level, there is always something to gain. If you find a topic challenging, use the support and resources available to help you succeed. If you are already confident, use them to explore areas that interest you beyond the curriculum and continue developing your skills. The more you put into your time at Edge Hill, the more you will get out of it.
