My advice would be to take as many opportunities up as possible if you are someone with an ambitious career path.

All the modules provide a great baseline for leadership and management skills. However, there were some themes and topics which particularly stood out to me as they offered a unique learning opportunity. These included statistics for economics, law for business, economic analysis, contemporary issues and development in economics.

I will be joining the civil service fast stream, which is the government’s leadership development scheme. I will put into practice the leadership and strategic skills I have learnt throughout my time at Edge Hill University. My ambition is to become a senior leader.

Edge Hill offered a couple of great opportunities to me, outside of the standard, learning. The first one was a short workplace placement I did with Edge Hill’s Small and Medium Enterprise, Productivity & Innovation Centre, (PiC). This was an interesting opportunity to learn how strategic decisions were formulated and implemented to solve issues faced by local SMEs.

The second opportunity was my placement year. With the help of Edge Hill’s staff, I was able to take a year out of my studies, to go join HMRC for a year, which gave me the experience required to join the aforementioned civil service fast stream.

My advice would be to take as many opportunities up as possible if you are someone with an ambitious career path. This degree, and all the degrees in the Edge Hill Business School, have excellent additional and supplementary learning opportunities. Not every one of them will be useful to your own goals. However, all of them will give you some sort of experience, which could be used in interviews and applications which could help you stand out.
