Georgina Cooper
BSc (Hons) Accountancy
During my second year of study, I completed a module which ensured that all students had an opportunity to gain valuable first-hand experience in the sector of their choice. Without this module I would not have completed my nine-month paid work placement at ‘Pennington Silver Chartered Accountants’ in Southport.
This subject opens so many doors for the future, and I knew I wanted to pursue a corporate career. During my education, I had a natural affinity for working with numbers and enjoyed problem-solving. I was also always interested in finance and economics, and this led to my decision to study accountancy. I am about to start studying towards becoming Chartered with ACCA, this will support my career massively.
During my second year of study, I completed a module which ensured that all students had an opportunity to gain valuable first-hand experience in the sector of their choice. Without this module I would not have completed my nine-month paid work placement at ‘Pennington Silver Chartered Accountants’ in Southport. This placement allowed me to gain hands on experience and this helped me secure my role at RSM UK. Additionally, this module ensured that all students started networking by creating a LinkedIn profile. This is very important and can massively help when trying to secure a job/graduate scheme.
There are many reasons why I enjoyed studying accountancy at Edge Hill, however, I would say that the lecturers that taught me and my peers had a huge impact on my experience. They were very engaging and supportive throughout each year of study and provided us with all the skills and knowledge necessary to maximise our potentials and obtain a high-class degree. Our tutors pushed us all to do our best and always encouraged engagement. Edge Hill encouraged all students to maintain high attendance and took absence very seriously. This definitely had a positive impact on me as it improved my discipline and time management skills, and better prepared me for working life after university.
During my time at University, I was able to develop my organisation and time management skills, I had to ensure all my assignments were completed on time and I had enough time to revise for exams. My experience at university also improved my resilience, achieving a degree is extremely challenging and a big commitment that requires dedication. University encourages independence and that is essential for a successful future, being able to use initiative to get things done.
I would advise prospective students to make sure they are choosing this degree for the right reasons. It is so important to be interested in the subject and enjoy learning. You must be prepared for the challenge.
One of the best things about EHU is the friendly community and atmosphere. The availability of such a large and diverse range of support services for students makes a huge difference to student experiences.
I strongly believe that transferring to Edge Hill was the best decision I could have made. I started my journey at Edge Hill straight into second year, I had already completed my first year of studying accountancy at a different University and decided to transfer for personal reasons. The team that dealt with my transfer were great, I only decided that I wanted to transfer around the middle of August and was apprehensive of my chances that I could. However, when I contacted Edge Hill, I was responded to extremely quickly by the recruitment team and they sorted my transfer extremely efficiently, it made this time of change much less stressful than it could have been. I was extremely nervous to start straight into second year and it was difficult at first to adjust to the change, but I soon settled in and began to notice how much better the quality of teaching was at Edge Hill. I was provided with the knowledge, skills, and encouragement from my tutors to do the best I possibly and all the hard work paid off in the end. I was felt so much more engaged in my lessons and was able to build a rapport with my professors.
