When I heard that Edge Hill was planning a whole series of events for Black History Month it was a really heartfelt moment. It’s amazing to know there are members of staff who care about us, not just because they have to but because they genuinely want us to feel at home. By running events like this they are advocating for us, they’re fighting our corner.

There can be a breakdown in communication between people from different backgrounds when there’s not enough space for people to express how they’re feeling and for others to ask questions to understand more. Without that, people will just believe what they see in the news or what someone said on Twitter.

This Black History Month at Edge Hill, students will be able to celebrate their culture or learn about other people’s. It’ll make a lot of students feel part of the community, properly part of the Edge Hill student body. I think black, Asian and ethnic minority people often feel left out. Hopefully this will reassure them they are being heard.

BHM 2023 personal highlight

I’m most looking forward to the Sports Day event to raise money for Show Racism the Red Card. It’s so important to highlight that racism is still prevalent in sport. Sport should be fun and open to everyone regardless of your skin colour.
