BSc (Hons) Biotechnology

We get to experience various sectors of biotechnology, including plant, industrial, medical and microbial biotechnology.
I developed an interest in Biotechnology in Year 11. I initially had plans to do an apprenticeship but couldn’t find one in biotechnology, so I applied for university, but I am so glad I did as it has been a great experience I’m lucky to have not missed out on.
Confidence in the lab, research experience, and how to promote myself. These are the top three skills I have developed during my degree.
The most memorable part for me has been my dissertation project which helped me build my confidence in both the lab and academic writing. And the memories with friends on campus and people from church.
We get to experience various sectors of biotechnology, including plant, industrial, medical and microbial biotechnology. We could also explore other modules of interest within biology, or take an elective module in another subject area.
The campus is beautiful with its modern facilities and its ethereal green spaces filled with a diverse wildlife. This is the best thing about Edge Hill for me. The Edge Link bus drivers are so nice, too. My favourite places on campus are the library, the faith and reflection room or by the lakes.
I hope to either become a genetic counsellor or become a lecturer. The variety of experience and skills I have acquired from this degree has opened multiple paths that I could possibly take. I will be taking a gap year to work for my church for a year to give myself more time to come to a decision.
The university has supported my degree by providing events and university culture that helped you feel connected. Facilities such as the library with study spaces, wellbeing support, career development and student societies are just a few examples.
Try different modules during the first two years to really find out where your interests lie. Your interests might change with exposure to more scientific sectors. This would be my advice to anyone considering this degree.
I would also say get as much support as you can from lecturers. Get involved with module evaluation surveys, speak to careers, go to student forums, and apply for internships for the summer of second year.
