Elly Benson
BA (Hons) TV and Film Production
I love being part of a team, working to create something that we’re proud of. It’s hard work but so rewarding when you see the finished products at the end of the year.
I was lucky enough to be an extra on All Creatures Great And Small. I also got some work experience on set. I’ve always had an interest in the arts, both watching and performing, and this confirmed to me that I want to be a part of that exciting environment!
I love being part of a team, working to create something that we’re proud of. I became really interested in the ‘behind-the-scenes’ aspect of film and television
I loved the feel of the University when I visited for the open day and applicant day. It felt so welcoming, and the campus is beautiful. The facilities for my course are amazing, as are the staff.
The course really encourages us to develop our creativity, and experiment with the range of equipment. It’s helped me to see the value of teamwork, resilience, and leadership.
I’ve loved my time studying so far. It’s hard work but so rewarding when you see the finished products at the end of the year – I’ve even been awarded an excellence scholarship.
My greatest achievement of my degree so far came on my second year TV Drama module. I was part of a really small group, working to produce a short pilot episode. We had a number of issues throughout the year, but we were so proud of our final project. It made all the stress worthwhile.
I’ve definitely made friends for life during my time at Edge Hill. And the staff I’ve worked with are so supportive too. I’ve been able to do some TV work experience, and been to places I might not have otherwise. And I’ve been all over the local area with my friends, as well. Nights out in town and trips further out. I went to Knowsley Safari Park in the first year with my flatmates. So much fun.
I’d love to work in TV production. I’m particularly interested in production management or locations.
My advice to others? Really show your interest. What do you love about film and TV, what do you want to be able to explore in your work, and what can you bring to the course?
I’ve always got a few TV shows on the go – something for whatever mood I’m in! One thing I’ve been watching is What We Do In The Shadows, and I’m loving it, it’s such a fun concept! I also like a bit of true crime – my favourite podcast is Bad People, but I like a good documentary too. I went down to Stratford-upon-Avon with my mum as we both love Shakespeare. We’ve been a few times now, and we always make sure to see a play at the RSC – this year’s focus was the Wars of the Roses.
I like to keep up with my friends on social media, and what’s going on in the world. I don’t tend to post that much myself, though.
Living on campus was great. I miss being two minutes away from my lecture rooms. My signature dish? Can’t beat a bolognese, especially in the slow cooker.
