Biography
Dr. Hayder is a medical doctor by training, with a specialization in forensic medicine and pathology, complemented by a doctoral degree in forensic genetics. His doctoral research focused on the genetic characteristics of the Iraqi population, specifically examining the Y-chromosome and mitochondrial DNA. Population genetics, forensic genetics, forensic pathology, and forensic medicine are among Dr. Hayder’s areas of interest.Â
Teaching
Dr. Hayder Lazim is a dedicated educator and researcher specializing in anatomy, clinical anatomy, and pathology, teaching across the MBChB and Physician Associate (MSc) degree programs at Edge Hill University. He has developed a comprehensive pathology curriculum tailored for second-year students, designed to bridge the gap between foundational sciences and clinical practice, ensuring a solid understanding of pathology within a clinical context. Hayder is HEA Senior Fellow (SFHEA).
In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Dr. Lazim plays a pivotal role in the admissions process. He is actively involved in formulating interview questions, conducting interviews, and participating in the selection of candidates for the Foundation Year in Medicine, direct entry to Medicine, and Physician Associate programs. His contributions ensure the recruitment of high calibre students who are well-suited for the demands of medical education.
Dr. Lazim also supervises postgraduate research projects, focusing on medical education and the Master of Surgery programs. His mentorship helps foster innovative research and supports the academic development of future medical professionals.
As the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusivity (EDI) Undergraduate Lead for the School of Medicine, Dr. Lazim is committed to cultivating an inclusive and supportive educational environment. He works to ensure that the medical curriculum reflects diverse cultural, social, and cognitive perspectives. This includes revising course materials, assessment strategies, and support systems to promote equity and inclusivity. Dr. Lazim’s efforts prepare students to provide compassionate care to diverse patient populations while empowering faculty to deliver culturally competent and inclusive education. His work aims to produce graduates who are not only academically accomplished but also empathetic and culturally aware practitioners.
Dr. Lazim is also an active member of the Cardiorespiratory Research Centre (CRRC) and the Health Research Institute (HRI) at Edge Hill University. His involvement in these research bodies reflects his commitment to advancing medical science and education through collaborative and impactful research.
