Charlotte Russell
BSc (Hons) Business & Management

I never thought I would have a graduate offer before I entered my final year, but this degree has opened so many opportunities for me.
I never initially planned on going to university. Throughout school, it wasn’t something I considered for my future. However, this changed when I started business studies in sixth form. I found the subject so interesting, especially the financial side of things, understanding the depth of what goes into every business really stood out to me. It sparked a genuine interest in pursuing a career in business. My business teacher played a huge role in this decision, if it wasn’t for their encouragement and support, I probably wouldn’t have considered university at all.
Coming from a small town, I was so nervous joining universities as they were all quite daunting. Edge Hill was the first university I visited that didn’t feel overwhelming. The strong sense of community and the campus environment made me feel right at home. The friendly atmosphere, along with the modern facilities and beautiful surroundings, really set it apart from other universities.
My favourite thing about my degree is how well it has prepared me for real life. The course offers a great balance of theory and practical experience, which has really helped me develop the skills I need for my career. From practicing interview techniques, CV workshops and learning the skills that can set me ahead of other candidates. I loved the fact that we could choose modules every year that we were particularly interested in. On top of that, as part of my year 2 module ‘employability’ we had to complete a 115-hour placement; after completing the hours, I secured a part-time job with this company. I have gained hands-on experience throughout my placement including office etiquette hands on skills that complemented my studies and expanded my CV. This opportunity that led to me receiving a graduate offer before even entering my final year, has taken a huge weight off my shoulders and allowed me to focus fully on my studies with confidence in my future.
My lecturers have been incredibly supportive throughout my degree, offering help in a variety of ways. They have provided extra help and support sessions, especially around exam time, which helped me feel more confident going into assessments. The one-on-one sessions were particularly valuable, as they allowed me to dive deeper into topics I was struggling with and gave me the chance to clarify any doubts. There are also often schedule 1:1 drop-in sessions throughout the semester if I ever need any extra help or support with my assignments. Beyond academic support, they have been a huge help in guiding me towards opportunities for my future, offering advice on career paths and helping me with applications for extracurricular activities like the Global Bloomberg Trading Challenge and the financial modelling workshop in London. Their support and encouragement have been key in helping me gain practical experience and partake in opportunities I never would’ve had the confidence to beforehand.
I never thought I would have a graduate offer before I entered my final year, but this degree has opened so many opportunities for me. It has given me the chance to build a great professional network, something I didn’t anticipate when I started. I’ve been able to secure a part-time job in a finance office, which has provided hands-on experience and industry insights. The biggest opportunity this degree has given me is the networking opportunities. The Business School has brought in so many business professionals, allowing me to not only gain valuable insights and recommendations, but build my network which has been incredibly helpful when needing advice or applying to graduate positions. Overall, this degree has not only enhanced my learning but has also provided invaluable opportunities that have shaped my career path and given me the confidence to pursue my goals.
My degree has significantly enhanced my employability by providing both the theoretical knowledge and practical experience that employers value. The course has equipped me with a strong understanding of key business and finance concepts, while also offering opportunities to apply this knowledge in real-world settings. In particular my ‘employability’ module allowed me to develop my interview skills, assessment day skills and improved my CV and cover letters. These overall have improved my confidence which has led to me applying for more opportunities and speaking to more professionals. Going into the graduate job world is scary, but having these skills and new confidence has prepared me so they are no longer as daunting and I am confident that I am as prepared as I can be.
I had the opportunity to attend a financial modelling workshop in London at a major bank—an experience that gave me valuable industry insights and connections. Additionally, my placement in a finance office has allowed me to gain hands-on experience with a well-known company, further developing my professional skills. This degree has also allowed me to learn about different career possibilities and has helped me build a well-rounded CV, making me stand out in the employment process. It has given me interview experience, improved my confidence, and provided access to networking opportunities, all of which have made me more competitive in the job market and prepared me for the next steps in my career.
There are so many opportunities available within the university, and the lecturers have been incredibly supportive in helping me take full advantage of them. Whether it’s applying for extracurricular activities or exploring career-related prospects, their guidance has been invaluable. The university’s commitment to helping students grow both academically and professionally has truly made a difference in my journey.
When I graduate, I hope to pursue a career in the finance industry, building on the skills and experiences I’ve gained during my degree. Having already secured a graduate offer with a well-known company, I’m excited to take the next step and apply my knowledge in a professional setting. In the long term, I aim to continue developing my skills, take on new challenges, and potentially work towards further qualifications to advance my career.
My advice to anyone considering studying this degree at Edge Hill is to make the most of the opportunities available and take advantage of the support offered by lecturers and the university. Edge Hill provides so many chances to gain practical experience, from extracurricular activities like the Bloomberg Global Trading Challenge to external opportunities. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, whether it’s applying for internships, networking with professionals, or getting involved in university events. The lecturers are incredibly supportive and always willing to help, so make sure to ask questions and seek their advice. Also take full advantage of the catalyst workshops and support sessions – they are there to help you! Most importantly, enjoy the experience and take every opportunity to build your skills and confidence, it will all help in shaping your future career.
