Headshot of alumni, Chantelle Carey.

Brenda Roberts really inspired us to realise that there was a role to be played, and that we could really do something to help these vulnerable young people, and that’s always stuck with me.

Chantelle Carey currently works as Designated Nurse Safeguarding Children at Liverpool Place. Chantelle completed three nursing qualifications with us, her most recent being a MA in Integrated Children & Young People’s Practice, whilst working within the NHS around 10 years ago.

Chantelle spent four years working as Named Nurse Safeguarding Children for the NHS, working with children and young people within the burns unit. Chantelle said her favourite part of the job was working with the teenagers from deprived areas, and their optimism despite their circumstances. Chantelle said that, “working on a burns unit, it was particularly important to prioritise safeguarding as burns could indicate signs of self-harm, neglect or abuse from others.”

Still working within safeguarding, but from more of a strategic perspective, Chantelle shared with students how the policies and actions underpinning care can be as important as the care itself when saving lives from a safeguarding perspective.

When asked on how she deals with carrying the burden of safeguarding incidents and disclosures, Chantelle said, “I’ve become pretty good at recognising when I’m having signs of burnout, and I have a really good supportive network of colleagues around me. We support each other.” She added, “I also run and do yoga, both of which are really important in keeping my mind and body healthy”.

Chantelle also said that her previous lecturer at Edge Hill, Brenda Roberts, was instrumental in her career path and emphasised that “she really inspired us to realise that there was a role to be played, and that we could really do something to help these vulnerable young people, and that’s always stuck with me.”
