PGCE Secondary Science (Chemistry)
I am from Kenya, where I trained and worked as a secondary school Chemistry teacher, supporting students academically, pastorally, and through STEM and sport. I chose Edge Hill University because of its strong reputation for teacher training, inclusive education, and outstanding school partnerships. As an international student, I was drawn to the University’s supportive environment, excellent Ofsted-rated Initial Teacher Education, and the way it blends theory with real classroom practice. I wanted to train in a setting that values high standards, research-informed teaching, and student wellbeing, and Edge Hill offered exactly that.
I chose the PGCE Secondary Science (Chemistry) with QTS because teaching Chemistry has always been at the centre of my professional identity. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Education (Chemistry) and taught in high-performing schools in Kenya, where my students achieved strong national examination results. I wanted to develop my teaching further with UK-based training focused on adaptive teaching, SEND, and evidence-based practice, so that I could support a wider range of learners and grow into a more reflective, highly skilled science teacher.
My experience at Edge Hill has been challenging, supportive, and deeply rewarding. The course combines strong academic training with real classroom experience, allowing me to apply what I learn directly in schools. My placement at Everton Free School, an alternative provision setting, has helped me grow in behaviour management, inclusion, and trauma-informed teaching. I feel well supported by my mentors and tutors, and the University encourages constant reflection, improvement, and professional growth. Overall, Edge Hill has helped me become a more confident, adaptable, and effective Chemistry teacher.
What stands out most is how real and practical the learning feels. You are not just taught how to be a teacher, you are trained to become one. Lessons are closely linked to what happens in schools, with a strong focus on inclusion, behaviour, and supporting every learner. Tutors model great teaching, so you experience the same strategies you are expected to use in your own classroom. It makes learning feel useful, supportive, and confidence-building.
Edge Hill offers support that feels genuine and personal. I received help with my studies, wellbeing, placements, and future career plans. As an international student, the International Office and academic tutors made sure I never felt lost or alone. Knowing there was always someone to ask for help allowed me to focus on learning, growing, and enjoying the experience.
The campus is friendly, diverse, and welcoming. It is easy to meet people, feel supported, and enjoy student life. I love spending time in the Catalyst building and the green spaces around campus. It’s a great place to study, relax, and meet people. I would also recommend joining sports or social events, as they are an easy way to make friends and feel part of the University.
One of the most memorable parts of my time here has been teaching in my placement school and seeing students grow in confidence. I have also enjoyed meeting people from all over the world and feeling part of such a diverse and supportive community. A highlight for me was starting my first UK school placement. Walking into a classroom in a new country and realising that I could still connect with and inspire students was a powerful moment. It reminded me why I became a teacher and how far I have come.
Moving to a new country, a new education system, and a demanding course was challenging at first. I overcame this by asking for support, staying organised, and staying positive. Support from tutors, mentors, and fellow students helped me adjust and keep going.
Edge Hill has helped me become more confident, reflective, and adaptable. Academically, I have developed stronger teaching skills, better planning, and a deeper understanding of how students learn. Personally, I have grown in independence and resilience.
The course has given me real classroom experience, strong subject knowledge, and professional confidence. I feel well prepared to teach in the UK or internationally because I understand how to plan, manage behaviour, and support different learners. My placement at Everton Free School has been especially valuable, helping me develop strong behaviour management, communication, and inclusive teaching skills.
My advice to new or prospective students is to be open, ask for help, and get involved. Edge Hill has so many people and opportunities ready to support you, you just need to take the first step. One thing I wish I had known before starting is just how supportive and friendly the University really is. You are never expected to do everything alone, even as an international student.
